ESB Cl VS Gen: Greatest Defensive Fighter of all time:

I was sitting around wondering what the significant differences in this poll would be if I posted it both in the Classic Forum and the General Forum. I'd like to compare results, if they allow the double posting. I've never tried it before. Here's my 9+ 'other' list. So you know, it is not in any kind of best to worst order. We've got slippers, blockers, rollers and clinchers. My personal pick is Pep. I'm anxious to see the write-in guys because there are some very good ones I left off, as they only allow ten options.

    1. Willie Pep
    2. Pernell Whitaker
    3. Nicolino Locche
    4. Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
    5. Wilfred Benitez
    6. James Toney
    7. Roy Jones, Jr.
    8. Benny Leonard
    9. Bernard Hopkins
    10. Other: Say who and I'll edit to put them up here by hand.
I would think some dark horses here would be Winky Wright, Hector Camacho, Muhammad Ali (Token HW?), Willie Pastrano, etc. Also Antonio Margarito and Chuck Wepner for their astoundingly superb FBT (Facial Blocking Technique), etc.

*Please don't be afraid to mention lighter weight guys you think only you know. I may not know them but that doesn't mean I don't want to. Some of those guys in the lowest weight classes get very underrepresented in lists like these. I'm as guilty as anybody else on that. Same goes for any obscure name. If I left off a supremely obvious name from the top nine, you are within your right to say "Boxed Ears, you ignorant slut.". I will take the insult like a man. But I will not necessarily agree with you if you do call me that.

It's just so hard to pick. You're going to get a lot of beating around the bush here Boxed Ears!

We can talk allday on different aspects of the art of defensive boxing, before defining the perfect guy for the vote and then pick the most suitable. You can give credit to the boxers who were truly defensive minded, who didn't lead and boxed off the backfoot exclusively. Then some might give credit to the guys that didn't mind being in punching range but still employed a great defense, very admirable.

You've got Benitez who used defense as a style, fighting off the ropes etc. You've got Whittaker, who did box off the backfoot sometimes, but other times would box in the centre of the ring, moving around his man jabbing, hitting downstairs, and just employing a defense you have to see to believe. Toney had a brilliant defense, and for me was a it one dimensional, just countering in the pocket, that make the defense even better in retrospect.

Mayweather likely won't get many votes in this forum, you can expect that, but this man has one of the best technical defences ever, period. People will detract from his resume and hence the ability of those who were trying to hit him, but them same guys hit other top fighters of the era regularly. Mayweather's defence is amazing, and it's versatile.

I doubt the general will attribute many votes for Leonard, but just look how this man maintauned his distance from his man. You see some clips where guys come forward and no matter how they go about it they stay the same distance from Benny all through the motion, and he lands jabs as they advance.

For me though, i'm going to go for the guy who i rate in terms purely of defence, nothing else contributing to my vote. Niccolino Locche. The way he defended against bodyshots, it was like he had a forcefield around his torso. And he would cling to his opponent and frustrate the **** out of them, his crowd loved it.

BTW, Hopkins for me equals number one defensive middleweight, just an opinion, there have been others like Holman Williams and Toney, but Hopkins is clearly my man here.

Hilario Zapata should be on the list though

For the record I picked Pea, proved it past prime against offensive beasts.
