Jerry Quarry vs David Haye for Hvywt Title

How long can Quarry take his punch for?

 

Quarry will survive the onslaught and out-box him. He has a history of beating great punchers.

 

I might have to sit on this one for a year or so.

 

He has a history of beating great slow punchers.

 

On the surface, Haye might look like the quintessential executioner for Quarry, but I don't think that it pans out that way. Unlike Haye, Quarry spent an entire career facing full sized heavywieghts and ones who were on the world level along with being members of a much better era. Sorry, but Valuev, Barrett, Bonin, Macarinelli, etc. Don't amount to the types of guys that Lyle, Shavers, Patterson, Foster, or Mathis were.

Haye's fast cominations, would certainly catch up to Jerry if the fight went beyond 6 rounds or so, but I don't see this one going that far. I think Quarry gets on top of him early, has Haye in trouble and doesn't let him off the hook.

I think Quarry takes a decision. Not confident that Haye is the type of fighter that can exploit his stamina issues.

Even if Haye's nothing exactly like he's seen before, he wouldn't be scared or worried about it. And David hasn't demonstrated that he can take a real heavyweight punch any better than that ^.

 

Based on what I've seen so far, I don't believe that Haye could have beaten Quarry. Quarry was an exceptionally durable, hard-hitting and experienced fighter who could counterpunch and trade punches with the best of them.

There should be no doubt that Quarry could have absorbed Hayes punches; just watch the way Quarry takes power shots from Joe Frazier (first fight) and Ken Norton. I don't believe that Haye hits harder than Frazier or Norton.

Haye is a quick fisted boxer, no doubt, but I don't think he boxes any better than the '60s versions of Jimmy Ellis and Floyd Patterson, both of whom Quarry fought well against. Haye is certainly inferior to Muhammad Ali as a boxer. Thus, I believe that Quarry would not have been overwhelmed, frustrated or too greatly troubled by Hayes's boxing ability.

Most telling in this fight is Haye's proven lack of durability: there is no way he could survive Quarry's powershots. In short, Quarry would have an easier time hurting Haye than vice verse.

Haye would have his moments in this fight...it would doubtlessly be competitive. But somewhere between the sixth and twelfth rounds Quarry's superior toughness and ring savvy would enable him to win this fight by knockout.

It'd be a nice fight to watch. But at the end of the day, the big factor to me is the ability of Haye to absorb that quick short non-telegraphed left hook of Quarry's. The later the bout goes, the harder it's going to be to shake that kind of punch off.

 

I'd comfortably make Quarry a favorite based on how he did against Patterson and Ali. Haye is very live in this fight, obviously, with his speed of hand and foot as well as punching power. Quarry's chin, grit and ability when trading are viable attributes in the hunt for Haye's vulnerable noggin.

Edit: I do feel we should note that Haye is almost the size of Muhammad Ali.

 

I think Quarry also but really its not possible to evaluate Haye this early in his HW career.

 

From what I have seen of Haye so far, Quarry would win. I think Jerry would have beaten Valuev also and perhaps by KO....but again I have not seen enough of Haye vs top level to make a fair evaluation. I'd like to see him against a puncher, which we all know Valuev is not. Haye has good amatuer pedigree and has talent, its how he handles adversity that I want to see.

 

I'm certain that Quarry would have knocked Valuev out. The fight probably would have ended in the later rounds. Quarry could have afforded to mix it up with Valuev, and for this reason he would have torn into Valuev with bombs when the moment was ripe. Haye, by contrast, could not afford to take that risk.

 

Yeah, look at the punches Shavers land early on. Those are clean hits from one of the most devastating punchers ever and Quarry just shrugs them off. Impressive.
