Does John Ruiz have one single fan?

What gifts are you talking about? I thought he deserved at least 2 out of 3 against Holy (they went 1-1-1) Also the Valeuv wins were controversial. I think Ruiz is a risk to anyone outside of the Klitchkos and Tua.

 

Maybe not, but fans or not He had made a lot of money enought to retire with good health something that most boxer never achieve and now is going to get another payday with Haye in UK, so good to him.

 

Ruiz got his share of gift decisions - Golota was probably the worst, but the third Holyfield fight was pretty bad too. But what was worst about Ruiz was how his connections with King got him rankings and title shots he didn't deserve, and favorable treatment for his illegal holding tactics. Perhaps worst of all, however, was his shameless overacting in several fights to force "low blow" calls in several fights.

Ruiz is a classic example of a fighter who wasn't very good, but benefited from the right connections to gain a status in the sport his abilities didn't merit.

Show me another fighter with such mediocre pure boxing skills who has achieved as much as Ruiz. The style issue is overrated - you do everything in your power too win a fight, trying to take advantage of the opponents' weaknesses. Hell, you could complain Wlad doesn't want to trade or that Ali didn't dance in the Foreman fight or Tyson didn't have as great a jab as Holmes. The bottom line is who wins in the end! Ruiz has been the Champion twice!

I don't know if it's because of childhood exposure to wrestling entertainment where trash talking is more important than the action itself or the power of HBO advertising - some fans just don't treat professional boxing as a sport anymore - it's as much entertainment as sport to them. I have nothing against entertainment - I love the Rocky movies but let's separate the two. When I'm watching a boxing fight, I want to believe the outcome has not already been determined or that the judges will give the nod to the more exciting fighter because he might draw a bigger audience next time. Or maybe I'm being naive to expect that?

Hmm I read his contract with Don King has expired. I hate him but when he fights Haye I'll be his number one fan. Maybe he can finally get some credibilty he is off Don Kings lap. I would LOVE to see ruiz make haye look like the ordinary journeyman he is.

This isn't true imo. Ruiz is quite a skilled pure boxer; watch any of his fights pre-Tua? Although at times guilty of excessive jab and grabbing, he was always good enough to outjab most fighters (unless they were middleweights); although its an ugly style it still takes some skill to successfully implement.

 

Guys, if you think Ruiz is a bum and its so easy to just jab and grab your way to being a world champion, why doesn't everybody do it?

In the Tua fight, Larry Merchant said Ruiz was the "best-schooled of the young heavyweights." There must have been a reason for that statement.


By the way, Ruiz will give Haye a far harder time than what Valuev gave him.
