In a fight, that Cotto was Obviously Losing, getting F**KING Destroyed...People are saying (and crying basically)...that Cotto shouldv'e been allowed to Finish like a Champ and attempted to finish the last minute on his feet..... But these are the same people...that posted in my Thread (awhile ago)...that indeed, Richard Steele's stoppage of Meldrick Taylor in the last 5 SECONDS of a fight in which TAYLOR WAS WINNING...WAS A GOOD STOPPAGE!!!! AHHH THE DOUBLE STANDARD IS ALIVE AND WELL!!!!
I think it should have been stopped between 9-10. So with a minute left in the last round it should have been allowed to finish. But people need to calm down with all this Bayless should never ref again crap. If you want to blame anyone, blame the corner. They should have been strong/smart enough to have got him out earlier.
----------------------------------------------------------- If cotto had indicated somehow he may be in with a chance of winning despite looking seriously unhealthy then MAYBE the ref could have considered but seriously that decision could have stopped Cotto from making an unncessary trip to the hospital so kudos to him. I thouhgt team Cotto should have stopped it earlier though. The man was very brave but took enough punishment allready by the 8th.
I've just posted in another thread that I'm watching it again now, and having just witnessed the 9th round in HD - it should have been stopped there, no doubt about it. The only criticism of Bayliss should be that he didn't call it earlier.
Cotto was a mess but in no way hurt. I would NOT have stopped it. That said, I have absolutely no problem with the stoppage. It was well within the range of reasonable, and Cotto was definitely going to lose anyway.
Let me be consist and say that I think BOTH Cotto and Taylor should have been allowed to finish the fight. However, I can't get too worked up in Cotto's case because he was gonna lose anyway. In Taylor's case, Richard Steele stole his victory - THAT'S the difference.
should have been stopped earlier but there's only 55 secs. then let the man finish and go out on his shield with his dignity and pride, even if in those 55 secs pac managed to ko cotto. cotto and all other fighters mentality is killed or be killed. cotto can recover from the physical damage and wounds but not letting him finish when it's so close to ending bruises his dignity and pride. that takes longer to recover. cotto is a proud man. it should have stopped when cotto's familiy walked out and didn't want to see any more.
As great a display as the fight was, I was starting to get nervous from Round 9 or 10 onward. It was clear that the fight was going to end in brutal fashion and Cotto could have been seriously injured. I was hoping his corner would stop the fight already, and have no problem seeing Bayless stop it in the final round rather than Cotto being carried out on a stretcher.
I think the ref's job was fine. Hindsight is 20/20. I can see why he stopped it when he did. Cotto was ready get put down again and rather than let him take more of a beating, which he had avoided for most of the last 3 rounds, he stepped in. I was satisfied he had given Cotto a chance to fight his way back into it, and when that wasn't coming, and Cotto in a vulnerable position again with Pac ready to swarm him, it was time. Some are saying too early, some too late. I say just right.
They should have allowed 3 extra rounds for Pac to hospitalise Cotto. Damn refs jump in too fast these days, they've sucked all the brutality out of what was once a noble sport.
