PacMan down by a jab & out by a left hook - can Khan mature & improve with Roach too?

Manny Pacquiao's early career is quickly becoming (or should become) the classic example in modern boxing how early losses and weaknesses could be put behind with a lot of work, a smart coach and things like gaining weight. Pac was out cold early in his career and knocked down hard by a single jab at 22, yet he took Cotto's WW left hook yesterday and quicky recovered to deliver a stunning performance to become a 7 division champion. Amir Khan is known as a "glass jawed joke" around here, but if the Internet had existed around the days Pac was knocked out, the Ricos would've labeled him as a joke too, only to look incredibly dumb years later.

Khan very impressively bounced back after the Prescott loss (age 21), and despite critics heavily favored Barrera and Kotelnik to stop the young kid, Amir already improved a lot under the guidence of Roach - and took some flush shots from Kotelnik to still win a shutout.

He's just 22 and his trainer says he might be his next big fighter when Pac is gone. Do you share Coach Roach's confidence in youngster Amir Khan?

make no mistake Pacquiao is a great fighter with or without Roach. However with Roach he is more than great.

    :thumbsup

That was interesting that Roach had said (to Merchant?) that even if he was in Cotto's corner he'd still confidently pick Manny to win. Of course, there's the usual grain of salt with Freddie-speak, but still. I can't remember hearing a trainer say something like that.

of course he can improve. However do I ever see Khan becoming a figher who is ready to engage his opponent and meet him in the middle of the ring? No I dont. I wanna see Khan sit down on his punches and plant his feet.

Khan has potential to become great with proper guidance (hopefully Roach is still in serviceable condition long enough to provide that for him), but he probably doesn't have the potential to become another Pacquiao. That guy's a once-in-a-lifetime kind of freak.

Interesting theory - we'll find out I guess but I'm sceptical. Khan is a tremendous talent but it's the way he reacts when tagged that bothers me. I'd rather he went over ala Hamed - which was largely balance and poor basic technique. Clean shots seem to short circuit Khan's nervous system.

Hope I'm wrong - seems like a thoroughly decent kid

KHAN: I was impressed with what I saw early in his career. He has lost a bit of confidence to put power behind his punches after the KO, he just afraid to get caught again. He will regain it in time.

Khan has got a lot of years ahead of him. As long as he stays w/ Roach's game plans and has a wicked work ethic, he'll do just fine. He'll be up there w/ the big boys in the very near future.

Khan obviously has a shaky chin but watching Pacquiao and other fighters kissing the canvas early, I believe punch resistence can improve with time and weight. Khan always had very thin legs and drained himself to make LW, so the difference moving up can be a big factor. Look at how powerfully built Pac's legs are nowadays, it helps a lot to deal with power punches. Khan might never be able to take a picture-perfect bomb to the chin, but he might've already improved his punch resistence a bit with some extra muscles at LWW to be able to shake off shaky moments.

The obvious other area to improve is power - Amir showed okay power (comination of speed, accumulation and accuracy) early, but his current style of fighting makes putting full weight behind shots impossible, so if he wants to get future opponents attention, he has to develop genuine power.

Pac ahs never had shaky chin, even when he was young. The first KO loss was a body punch against Torrecampo when he was just 18 and the second loss was againts singsurat via a body punch when he was so weight drained at 112. Immediately after that he jumped straight to 122 bypassing 115 and 118. Had he gained some belt in those two divisions, then he could have been a 9 weight division champion.

Amir Khan has huge potential with Roach. His main problem is his chin, and if he can improve that he can be a force to be reckoned with.
