I was wondering if you guys could tell me anything about Emile Griffith, I've heard him mentioned a few times and I'm interested. Often I'm not on boxers from so long agao (as there is less footage, but there seems to be plenty on Griffith). What style was he, what was his resume like, what was the quality of his era and were will he go down in his divisons rankings (if at all)? Thanks
He's one of the greatest welters in history and has great pedigree at MW also. A very well rounded fighter with few weaknesses to his game there aren't very many fighters, at all, who could be expected to beat him at his best, though there remain question marks over certain aspects of his mental strength, probably in part due to the death of Benny Parrett caused by injuries he sustained in a fight with Griffith. He was a stinging puncher but not a great one, had a two fisted attack, was a very good general and had that "odd" body shape that made guys like Langford so dangerous (slim legs and hips but with a huge upper body for a welter, and strength to match). A superb and adaptable boxer, he had a troubling and awkward style which not everyone found pleasing. World champion at 3 weights, he fought a huge amount of title fights, in the low twenties i believe. His top line wins are probably Rodriguez, Tiger, Archer, Parrett, Benvenuti but his resume is deep and wide. One of the truly great fighters, i'd rank him inside the top 35 of all time pound for pound.
All time great jab. He understood timing and distance as well as anyone and the proper millisecond to throw a jab and when not to. Rarest of breeds and stayed with 1 trainer his whole career.
Be a sponge. Get your hands and eyes on all footage of Griffith you can. If you like the sport you won't be disappointed.
He is a sure fire great fighter i think the best way to describe him is as a Ring Technician as he did everything well and of an equal high standard. He has Facebook and readily speaks to fans, you can find it at here. It is interesting as Griffiths adopted son Luis Rodriguez types and reads stuff of the computer for him and Emile tells him to type his reply. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=171962&id=607675699&l=5abbc4d636#/profile.php?id=1659624022
Yes, I am on his face book page as well! I sat next to him this past Friday night when we had a dinner just before the Finals of the New Jersey Diamond Gloves, which I am also the President of, in Linden, New Jersey. I had the pleasure of introducing him, along with Bobby Czyz and former Referee Tony Orlando. Emile, who is a good friend of mine, was 1st rated in the Top 10 in May 1960 and he was last rated in March 1978, in the Welterweight and Middleweight Division, for a total of 192 months. He fought more Main Events at Madison Square Garden then anyone in boxing history. He fought more Championship rounds then anyone in boxing history. He was the Welterweight Champion 3 times and Middleweight Champion twice. When I introduce him, I also include that he held the Junior Middleweight Title as well. Right now he is not doing that well. He walks very slow and speaks and writes the same way. Back in 1992, he was brutally mugged by several guys with baseball bats, and left hospitalized for two months, and he has never been the same. He is still wonderful around people, and he is very happy when he is around them too. I can not tell you how many times he took pictures, signed autographs for anyone that wanted one during the night. He does this all the time. He loves my wife too. When his manager, Howie Albert passed away last January, Emile, Bill Gallo, Dave Anderson, Gil Clancy, Juan LaPorte, Lou Duva, Al Certo, Randy Neumann, Harold Weston, Richard Burton, Bob Duffy, Matt Fargo, Irish Pat Murphy plus several other members of Ring 8, Ring 25 and the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame all attended, as I gave the Eulogy and Rung the bell 9 times.
Me too..is it a breach of Facebook etiquitte to resubmit a friend request? I've exchanged pm's with him twice, and he's the nicest guy imaginable. What a boxing hero of mine...I discussed the Tiger fight, and some of the guys like Benvenuti and Monzon, and his opinions of them.
he will add you eventually you can message him and he will respond It is great speaking to him, im sending him some of his fights that he hasnt seen
