The guy has been hit hard plenty of times, he didn't just forget what it was like. His sparring partners were of low quality but that made him just generally, in all ways, unprepared. To try and pin it specifically on not preparing for Pac's power is stupid. Not preparing for Pac's speed (but then how can you) hurt him much more, as evidenced by Pac punching Cotto in the middle of Cotto throwing combinations.
The guy is getting hit in the head. Your telling me he's gonna remember that. Hell I wander if he remembers his name half the time. Your telling me being hit hard in previous fight that happened many months prior is gonna carry over to future fights. Now thats stupid. The body heals and living comfortably affects that. Thats the point of training, to sharpen the skills and prepare the body to absorb the incoming punishment. Cotto did prepare for Manny's speed. He had in his training camp two quick southpaws. Did he have any hard hitters? Looking at them I say no.
Dude, I ASSURE you that you remember what it feels like to get hit hard. Why do you think many fighters lost a step after their first KO or serious knockdown? It's 99% mental, and it's because they remember how it happened, how it felt, and they fight tense and nervous in an effort to avoid it. Was there any point in the fight that Cotto looked prepared for Manny's speed? Manny basically hit him whenever he wanted after the first couple of rounds. That's not a function of power.
Nothing could prepare you for Pac's speed because no sparring partner could emulate his style. You might get a fast fighter like Judah, but judah throws in conventional way, not in odd angles and definitely, not non-stop. or you might get someone who throws in odd angle but would not have the power or speed to go with it. Becides in sparring, you do not want to get hard hitters because that is not the purpose. There is no such thing as to prepare you for your opponents bigger punch. The purpose is to get fighters who would have the same style as your opponet so that you could practice or apply your strategies. Now, if your sparring partner is KOing you, you might as well ask that one to fight your opponent. When Pac took on a middleweight as a sparring, it ws=as not because he punches hard but because he emulates Cotto very well, plus, Pac would feel how a welter would apply his weight, like in close quarter fighting.
He was bobbing and weaving many of Manny's punches in the fight. The problem was he was stunned by Manny's power and he had no time to react. Take a look at round 4 where he was comfortably winning the round. Then a quick uppercut by Manny sends him to the canvas.
Well you better tell that to Manny's trainers who picked hard hitting punchers and even paid them $1,000 if they were successful in dropping Manny. And obviously it paid of. Since Manny did a better job handling Cotto's punches then Cotto did handling Manny.
I don't know, Pacquiao was taking breathers in there. The second knockdown, took Cotto's legs out, Cotto wasn't the same after that.
That offer to pay $1000 bucks to knock Manny down isn't new, it's always on the table, regardless of who he is preparing for. It's because they want Manny's partners to work him hard and push him, not because they want to get him used to getting beaten up.
A quick uppercut that he didn't see coming, that hit him directly on the chin while he was in the middle of throwing punches. And also didn't knock him out. You don't have to have monster power to put a guy down with a shot directly on the chin, but to do it in the time between the other guy throwing punches you need some serious speed. Not to mention the angle he was hit at was, as mentioned, anything but orthodox and therefore unexpected. Pac hit Cotto with bombs all night long, but the only two that put him down were the ones he didn't see coming and had no way to mitigate. Because of the speed and unorhthodox angles.
I think Cotto chose to brawl when he should have boxed. He was doing that well early on and was catching Manny well with stiff jabs. Once he got hurt, the gameplan went out the window and he could have used a more experienced corner at that point.
It's probably the worst preparation I can think of I mean goin into a superfight fight of your life with someone like pacman p4p king, already at a slight disadvantage with 145, already having just coming out of a war with clottey, having a weak inexperianced corner of yes men and bad quality/choice of sparring partners I mean this is not the way and cotto has had to pay the price when we know we saw somethings that night which said 'he could probably beat pacman is he sticks to this or that' etc et
Enough already. You were already told that Cotto was damaged goods, you didn't believe it, but now you should be able to see it for yourself.
