This is not saying, should he be fighting in the Welter division-because its clear to me, he could handle himself vs any welterweight. His incredible speed and power would be a force for anyone. However, he has weighed in at 142 if i remember and 144 and i doubt he should come in any higher than 144. Hes only moving up apparently 4 or 5 pounds each time on fight night. Clearly hes knowhere near in any kind of struggle to drop weight rather he might be having more issues with trying to keep a higher weight. I guess my point is....is his optimum weight at 140? Honestly do you see anyone coming close to him at 140? Im sure he can reach that very comfortably. I also dont get it when people say things like 'hes full blown/time welterweight now'. Hes just that good that he can fight there but hes still giving up quite a bit of weight when he fights there. Especially as i see every fight from now being at 147. I dont think from now on he (or rather his team) should be looking at catchweights. E.g Just say a Clottey bout was to happen.....Pac fight night might be around 149, whereas Clottey might be nearer 170! Im not saying anything new here but does anyone else think differently or have different views?
For me NO. :deal He just beat a welter fighter . . . but I don't consider him a real welter after just one fight . . . he is fighting above his comfort zone.
Good topic. I don't like the fact that everyone says he's a legit WW but he hasn't fought at the actual 147 lb mark once ?!!! Yes he can fight with welterweights but how many times is he going to have catchweights. If your the WW champ you should be able to fight someone who is 147 lbs. NO STIPULATIONS!!!!
Hes not a welterweight. These fights were fantasy 2 years ago. Now people wants to see him fight at 147. They want to see him lose by fighting handicapped, thats fine. But when you dominate the #2 or #3 WW in the world like hes never been dominated b4 and you came in the ring barely a few pounds over 147. Thats legend man...he aint losin
If he does lose at welterweight the man to beat him should get an insane amount of credit. Probably won't (from everybody) but should.
He is a natural WW if we agree that the WW's right now are natural JMW-MW! Whilst the heaviest I seen him come to the ring is 149 (2lb above WW), we seen the WW's come into the ring up to 160lb, MW's!
All of this natural weight stuff is bull**** anyway. The kid has the goods to weigh in between the welterweight ticks and potentially beat any welterweight out there, well then he is a welterweight as of right now. He could still fight at Jr. Welter as well, of course. Some guys have the ability to move between divisions more easily than others. Is Paul Williams a welter? Jr Middleweight? Middleweight? It's not really cut and dry. For now it's safe to say that Pac is a welter because that's where the big fights are for him, and that's where he's likely to finish out his career. Also note that measurement wise Pac and Cotto are within a hairs breadth of each other in every respect, and no one wonders whether Cotto is a welter. http://www.pacquiaovideo.com/2009/09/manny-pacquiao-vs-miguel-cotto-tale-of.html
Pacman is best at 135lbs, but he is not a one punch guy so he doesn't really need to put mass...the only problem in moving up is that the guys will get bigger which could make things harder for him when they do land anything...that said I will put my $ on Pacman to become a heavyweight champ against Vitali :yep
NO. his last 4 fights he weigh in... 134 @ LW (diaz) 142 @ WW (oscar) 138 @ JWW (hatton) 144 @ WW (cotto) - has to take 8,000 calories a day to maintain the desired weight. He has never weigh above 149 lbs at fight night. No he is not a natural WW. But like Roach said a year ago, pac punches like a MW and seems to have the speed of a SF. FREAK!!!
I dont think pac can make lightweight as comfortable as people think. I think 140 right now is his best weight. Just fighting at 147 for the big names cash and legacy and has the skills to do it.
Oh they will, this man is legendary. It wont be easy even for Floyd. They will get credit. I'll say this, years from now..when hindsight slaps back..historians will remember PAc and where he came from and how he gave his heart out in that ring challenging himself. I wouldnt be surprised if his greatness isnt enhanced. This is the man who fought at catchweights (going up) to make great fights happen when no one else dared.
