How big is Morales win against Pacquiao going to become?

Instead of using Sal's win over Azumah, I could also have used Jones's win over B-Hop. All great, great wins, but not wins that I would class as appreciating in value, because the beaten fighter had clearly improved by the time he hit his peak.

Morales didn't even need that win to be remembered as a great. That's the crazy part.

Seeing how rapidly he declined thereafter makes it all the more compelling. Like he discharged everything he had left in a valiant last stand. Look at his legacy had he just retired then.

I like what you did there. I've been trying to say Spinks should be rated higher than Jones for a few weeks now, and although I can kind of see an argument either way, why do people try and make out like the Hopkins win was a special achievement? The guy was an absolute farcry from the fighter you see today, whereas Jones always had the physical gifts, Hopkins had to hone his technical ability and defensive prowess over a number of years. Just as Ray Leonard was a world class fighter coming straight out of the Olmypics, so was Jones in my opinion.

Morales beating Pacman at 130 is like Haugen beating Pazienza at 135. Doesn't matter that much.

In time, I think this victory is going to look sensational!

Honestly, I picked El Terrible to beat Pacquiao. Their first fight went more or less like I expected. When they had the rematch ten months later, I expected a repeat of their first fight--despite the fact Morales had been bested by Raheem in the interim.

In the early-going of the rematch, the fight looked a lot like their first encounter. Morales was outboxing Pacquiao and appeared to be on his way to victory. He won four of the first five rounds, and if it weren't for a flurry of ferocious lefts delivered by Pac at the end of the second round, Morales would have been pitching a shutout.

Then the sixth round (I'm pretty certain ) Pacquiao unleashed a vicious body attack and from that point on, slow but surely, he wore El Terrible down. I remember thinking, "Wow! I've heard the expression of fighters aging over night, and it's now happening right before my eyes."

I short-changed Pacquiao that night. For the most part, I attributed his win to Morales being shot. After all, at that point, Morales had lost 3 of his previous 4.

Looking back, however, that was the fight where Pacquiao BEGAN his transition into becoming a more complete, two-handed fighter.

Morales may have lost two of three in the famous trilogies, but that he holds a victory over each, including a win over Pacquiao when he was past-prime? That's going to be something that people remember going forward.

If Pac continues to dominate, and for argument's sake, adds a Mayweather and a Mosley to his list of victims next year--then the win will look even better, yet.

Not for me. Barrera proved over three fights he was better than Morales. The Pacquiao win was a great one but if it was the Pacquaio from now he would have been beaten. Barrera's battering an unbeaten Prince Naseem needs to be taken into consideration as well.

I also have Barrera higher by only one place, but I think the three fights just proved that neither fighter had a significant edge over the other. Wonderful fighters, both of them. Morales has a slightly deeper resume, and Barrera went 2-1 in the trilogy. Their first fight will be talked about..for years and years and years.

No theres not much between them, in a way they were made for each other similar to how Vazquez and Marquez are I just think Barrera wins six times out of ten. Interestingly Barrera beat more world champions, I know this doesnt equate to a superior resume but its something to think about.

Daniel Jiminez, Eddie Cook, and Enrique Sanchez were all world champions. none of them were great though. I don't put too much stock in statistics, these days, even average fighters can win world titles.

I wrote at length on this subject last week, in my thread in the General "Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter p4p since Pernell Whitaker" (another objective classic :D), and I even used the example of Leonard as well! Spooky.

Hopkins had gone the 12 round distance ONCE before he fought Jones - once! And he obviously had zero world title experience. And he did not fight in the same style as he did once he was at his peak. For all those reasons, I agree whole-heartedly.

not a bad post but here is where you maybe wrong. morales lost to pac in the rematch after being completely domianted by zahir raheem. so as it appears, pac, at his best, never beat a prime morales. not saying he couldnt but morales was already on the decline. thats however, is not pac's fault

The win looks even greater now - it was still big when it actually happened tho - but what makes it really special is the fact that Morales did this to the version that KD MAB 3 times, stopping him in 11 & KD JMM 3 times in one rd, drawing that one.... Erik did better than his Mexican rivals against the exact same version of Manny, not only coming off a loss vs his most hated rival having to lift himself psychologically but in the LAST WIN OF HIS CAREER..... that is nothing short of A+ elite proving ****, especially when you look at Manny Pac`s capabilities & where he is now.

    Morales is the man !
