Armstrong and Duran are two names that immediatly spring to mind, but who else? Other usual suspects in people's top 10 p4p like Robinson, Charles and Ali are not foremost known for their inside fighting (certainly not Ali). Were Fitz, Greb and Langford? At least Fitz and Langford weren't, were they? Which fighters are a long way from the top 10 overall, but scores highly in terms of inside fighting? Frazier, I'd say; anyone else? Your thoughts?
Tommy Burns is seldom mentioned in discussion of great infighters but he was verry strong in this department.
I would say Langford definitely was an infighter and Fitz seems to have been based on acounts of some of his fights.
Duran for me definitly so skilled inside. I suppose Jung-Koo Chang could get a mention here. Also Pernell Whittaker deserves a mention also Pascual Perez the angles he got inside were very impressive
Sandy Saddler, Jeff Fenech, Israel Vasquez, LaMotta, Stanley Ketchel, Benny Leonard, Nico Loche, Charley Burley, Carlos Ortiz, Mickey Walker, Billy Conn.
Leonard and Burley? Thought they were mainly mid-range fighters. Were they equally strong on the inside? In a p4p sens Bowe is up there as well. Haven't seen anyone his size being so good on the inside.
Leonard could do anything: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfQwLykgKGE[/ame] Burley was enormously strong and set up punches inside, like everything else though, he didn't do it the "right" way. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp9lkBqm6bQ[/ame]
My three personal favourites are Chavez, Duran and Whitaker. They all employed different styles of in-fighting but they were all very effective. Of the three, I prefer watching Chavez on the inside. He used far less mauling and wrestling than Duran and stayed inside much more than Pea.
Really nice Burley clip! Not too much inside fighting, but really good all the same. Can see why Burley is your favourite. Like a bigger, somewhat rougher Whitaker in a way. I wonder how much "the row" of that day have influenced modern slicksters. I've heard that at least Hopkins and Toney have admitted learning from Walcott and Moore. Burley really looks ahead of his time to me. A true jewel.
Burley needed more activity/aggression fighting in that era. Were he fighting today he would be a squillionare. As it stood he never made more than two grand.
Thank god the man isn't alive today, seeing guys with less than a tenth of his talent making many thousand times more.
Marlon Starling Donald Curry. Pedroza Rafael Herrera Happy Lora Qawi Chang Conteh Archie Moore Toney Nunn had great offensive technique in theory on the inside, especially for a big guy, but also willingly let fighters tee off on him there.
