The only reason people hold (or pretend to hold) Kessler in such high regard

is to legitimize their claims on how great Calzaghe was.

I like Kessler but he is a limited fighter. Calzaghe gets too much credit for this win, the lacy win, and pretty much his entire career: A career that was always about staying undefeated and NEVER about being the best.

    Agreed.

It also seems that most Kessler fans, are Calzaghe fans too.

I was just about to post this...It would have worked either way..Had Kessler dominated the tourney..Joe would have looked great. They have the same fanbase.

They are, for the most part, first and foremost Calzaghe fans.

Disagree..... I was a fan of Calzaghe but I couldn't care less how people rate 'his legacy' on a forum.

He's not by any means world class, but he is a very decent solid fighter. Kessler was competitive against Calzaghe and has beaten some decent fighters (Andrade for example is not an easy nights work for anyone - and Kessler shut him out for 12 rounds).

On tonight's showing I feel Kessler may have lost something due to his inactivity, however the fight clearly showed to me that Ward is a level above Kessler and his style (namely his footwork and handspeed) was one that Kessler couldn't deal with now or at any point.

Shut up, errsta. That simply isn't true. That bull**** gets thrown around a lot and while there may be a good deal of crossover you can't make an absolute claim like that in general terms, as there's plenty clear disproof of it in people like me.

I've been a Kessler fan since before he fought Joe, and while I respect the guy have never really been a Calzaghe fan. I rooted for Mikkel to knock Joe out.

Ward just beat Kessler worse than Joe did. At least against Joe, Mikkel won some clear rounds.

Here is the thing, Joe Calzaghe's resume is so weak that it was on a sliding scale that depended heavy on what Kessler, and Lacy did in thier careers. We have seen that Lacy was a hyped overrated one trick pony that had his best weapon taken away from him with a shoulder injury. Now we have seen Kessler get dominated by a young upstart with less then half the fights.

This is a problem that fighters with better resumes dont have...when is the last time you heard someone say that Leonard was great because he beat a 40 year old former great that beat alot of great fighters??? Or that Pac is great because he beat MAB who beat Morelas. No those fighters are called great because they beat great fighters both in thier primes and past thier primes. Its Joes fault, he could and should have done more, but now that his place in history is placed on the shoulders of two or three fighters that he beat is really sad. As because of this Calzaghe will not hold up to the test in 10 or 20 years, he will be a forgotten fighter outside of the UK.

Please note what I said in my original message - I don't care at all how people rate Calzaghe's career. I agree with some of your points (not sure about Hopkins being a former great though), but simply I was a fan and enjoyed watching him.

Tonight was all about Ward, not Calzaghe.

So because some Calzaghe fans hold Kessler in high regard as a Calzaghe opponent, that means the only reason anyone holds him in high regard is because they have a hidden agenda as a Calzaghe fan? Oh, or they're a Danish national?

Sorry to spoil the party, but again - living proof to the contrary, right here. :hi:

That's acceptable. errsta's titular claim - which is something you see echoed a lot around here - is a sweeping black-and-white generalization and something there needs to be less of. :good
