All these people who talk about Kess was a hype job, not a world level fighter etc are really starting to annoy me, this is a problem with many boxing fans today. Just because a fighter loses does not mean he is a hype job etc, he just lost a fight. Kessler held 2 of the belts at SMW and then lost these to Calzaghe, after this he went on to win one of these belts back, and a few yrs later lost it in only his 2nd pro defeat. He is obviously an elite/world level fighter at SMW, fighters lose people, its part of the sport we all love on here, very very few retire without a loss.
No. Kessler didn't take a bad beating from Calzaghe and he hasn't been in any real wars. He went into last nights fight as a world-class fighter in his athletic prime. Just because he lost doesn't mean he was "ruined", "overrated", "exposed" or any of the other words thrown around far too easily on this forum. I prefer to give credit to Ward for a superb victory.

It was his first loss. Kessler is a confidence fighter, he doesn't have that same confidence anymore after his first loss. He didn't didn't turn up last night.
He was very flat last night, no doubt. Credit has to be given to Ward, minus the dirty tactics, but Mikkel looked like a ghost of what he had been. Not sure if his confidence has gone down after the Calzaghe loss and some minor-tiered bouts since.
Ward is a bad stlye matchup for Kessler, period. Kessler is a basic 1-2 puncher with no inside game, and who doesn't go to the body. He went up against a faster, multi dimensional boxer. Ward can fight on the inside, he can fight on the outside, he can fight right or lefty, he can box, he can brawl. The guy can basically do everything. I said before the fight that this was the toughest matchup for Kessler and that he would lose. Styles make fights people. It's as simple as that. The complaining about the rough house tactics is ridiculous as well. It was clear as day from the 1st round that Ward's speed and versatility were going to be a real problem for Kessler. Kessler was not ruined by Calzaghe. Kessler lost because he went up against a guy who had all the tools to exploit Kessler's weaknesses.
Ward probably would beat Kessler without the elbowing, excessive holding, headbutting and an absolute joke hometown ref. Unfortunately, we weren't given the opportunity to find that out last night. As I said, Taylor got beat but he got beat cleanly by Abraham. The two other fights were embarrassing because of the tactics employed. Likely, both fights were won by the right guy but they both detracted from what should be a great tournament. That was especially true last night. Two headbutts appeared to cut both of Kessler's eyes, and that affected the outcome of the fight.

No he didnt ruin him but you never know phycologically what went on. As ive said i give credit to Ward...but wasthat really as good as Mikkel could fight? Im not sure
The key for Ward from the Calzaghe fight was he learned what the correct approach to defeating Kessler was. So, even if Kessler had not been ruined by Calzaghe -- a point open to debate -- then the blueprint for how to defeat Kessler was laid out. Ward used that blueprint, complete with elbows, headbutts, excessive holding and a joke ref. None of which the vastly-superior Calzaghe needed to beat Kessler easily, 8-4 or 9-3.
