My list attempts to answer what most non boxing people ask, who would have beaten who ?, who would have won if they were the same size ? who is the best ? Virtually everybodies list on this forum is a boxer A has a better resume than boxer B, type list, my list is a boxer A would beat boxer B type list. If two boxers are in the same group {standard, ability etc} and one boxer has beaten the other boxer in the ring, he is going to be ranked higher by me. The man that beat the man that beat the man, less chance of bias coming into it then. I have Calzaghe one place above Hopkins, because he beat him fair and square in the ring {in Hopkins own backyard it has to be said, home advantage is big in boxing like most sports}, Although both boxers were old, they were both 90% prime, as was verified by Hopkins total schooling of middleweight king Kelly Pavlik and Calzaghe's schooling of boxing legend Roy Jones Jnr in their next fights. Prior to Hopkins getting his first title fight against Jones Jnr and Calzaghe's first title fight against Eubank, if you added up the win loss records of Bernards and Joes opponents, Joes opponents had better win/loss records than Bernards, Joe was also stopping virtually all his opponents as he had not injured his hands at that stage. Obviously both boxers are only just starting out so the quality of opponents as you would expect was not that good, because Joes opponents had better win/loss records and Joe stopped most of them compared to Bernard, i give Joe the edge in their early career. When their championship careers started i give limited credit for Hopkins losing to Jones jnr {a loss is a loss is a loss, could Calzaghe have done any worse}, also Hopkins got knocked down twice against Mercado and got a draw, Calzaghe just beat his opponents fair and square, I must admit that all in all Hopkins opponents during his championship career were better, not miles better {as I dont give 'points' for losses, only for wins}, so i gave Hopkins the edge up to the point in time that they faced each other, whoever won the fight head to head was going to be the better man in my ATG list and Calzaghe won a close fair decision {116-111, 115-112 with only the notorious Adalaide Byrd who has a reputation for voting for her own ethnic type giving it to the home boxer 113-114}. The bottom line is I think Calzaghe beats Hopkins at any stage of their careers . PS Resume is not the be all and end all of compiling ATG lists, Pacman has a better resume {slightly} than Pretty Boy, yet I think {just like the bookies and most experts} that Mayweather beats him in the ring, if Mayweather beats Pacman in the ring I shall rank Floyd higher, as he will be the better boxer, unfortunately most people on here will do the opposite :nut. Boxing and Sport is about winning not about fighting as many big names as you can, then losing to half of them and still getting credit for being beaten in an ATG sense.:verysad
1. No he didnt Hopkins won that fight for me and about half the boxing fans, he landed more accurate punches all night and made Calzaghe look the fool 2. Hopkins was 43yo, which is simply old, a prime Hopkins knocks Calzaghe out or wins a wide decision
He got robbed in MErcados back yard winning 9rounds on any fair persons scorecard, not that you'd know that
Hopkins won the fight for you, crap, polls have been run on ESB and Calzaghe won according to 80% How do you explain Hopkins winning every round versus a prime Pavlik ?
It's ****en ridiculous to have Calzaghe ranked higher than Hopkins. You said Hopkins was 90% prime...please get off Calzaghe dick. I'd say Hopkins was about 70% prime maybe 75%. definitely not 90%. Prime for prime Hopkins would beat him.
Doesn't even matter who would beat who prime for prime, Hopkins still has a stacked resume at Pavlik (shutout), Trinidad (shutout), Tarver (shutout), and was the first man to stop Oscar De La Hoya and Glen Johnson. I didn't even mention the Winky Wright win and his Middleweight reign, he's so much greater than Joe it's untrue.
Quite simply, the only reason you would rank Calzaghe above Hopkins is because you don't know what you're talking about.
Hopkins is FAR greater then JC,and Prime Hopkins would beat Joe just like Past Prime Hopkins beat him in 08
People don't understand simple logic here. I'm a huge Hopkins fan, but Calzaghe beat him, albeit in a very close fight. There is no way Hopkins was shot or 'too old' if you take into consideration his other performances around that time. I'd have to say I think that victory definitely ranks as Calzaghe's most impressive.
So you have complete disregard as to who each fighter has beaten over their long careers? They both showed similar domination in their respective weight divisions, but it was Hopkins who fought some of the premiere fighters in the world and absolutely dominated them from bell to bell.
Calzaghe beat Hopkins head to head away from home. Calzaghe unbeaten Hopkins lost twice to Taylor {could Calzaghe have done any worse} Hopkins agree to fight Calzaghe back in the day, but asked for double the money 24 hours later after finding out the risk {thats a fact, Hopkins pulled out of their agreed fight back in the day}. If Hopkins had fought Calzaghe back in the day would Hopkins have won in Joes backyard infront of Calzaghes own crowd, people need to ask themselves where any fantasy fight would take place ? {A perceived close fight could come down to the venue, particularly when weighing up boxers from different continents}
