Not questioning that. But Hamed would have been better served using his cat-like quickness and explosive power in other ways.

You can be unorthodox and still be fundamentally sound (see RJJ)

 

Naseem Hamed.......became a conventional fighter...tried to learn boxing....BIG Mistake...he was better as an athletic freak

 

Tommy Hearns. Tommy is obviously an ATG and HOF, but he would have ended up with wins over SRL and Hagler if he had used his height and boxed from the outside. He had the jab and right hand but just refused to not get into a brawl.

 

Actually it made him all time famous.
What ruined his career was his physique.

 

Hagler would have chopped Hearns down anyway..........it would have just taken a bit longer. Perhaps 6 - 8 rounds instead of the actual 3 round war.

 

Chico. He outboxed Casamayor in his prime and he was generally a very good boxer. Just like mixing it up too much.

Are you being sarcastic? Gainer was anything but a brawler and slugger. He is probably the worse runner the sport has evern seen. I lost count of how many times I heard him booed at the end of fights for his absolute refusal to even attempt to engage.

 

You can blame his father for that. Great nomination.

Gerry Cooney won all his fights swinging for the fences in the first rnd. When he got his title shot against Holmes he did exactly opposite trying to conserve energy in case the fight went towards the distance. This lost him the opportunity to try and take Holmes out before Larry got into his rhythm and his superior boxing skills were able to take over and win the fight. Cooney was never a serious contender after that loss.

 

I know I'm gonna get **** all over me, but still:

Miguel Cotto

He's so much talented as a BOXER with a great arsenal and a superb jab to be an excellent technician, but was raised as a boxer-puncher, a warrior first, who came through tough fights with a lot of damage he would've managed to avoid if he was raised as a boxer from day one. He showed very good boxing skills as a youngster years back, but he only became physically stronger, but not more polished technically, mainly due to Evangelista's and Santiago's limitations as trainers. Manny Steward could do magic with the kid, making Cotto give up phyisical strength to speed, warrior mentality to textbook boxing and good defense, also better stamina and strategic thinking. He's a very capable boxer who underrates his own boxing skills, therefore never mastered it. Maybe he's not ruined. I'd love to see him team up with Steward.
