without a doubt. I remember seeing his brutally knock out Taylor and hearing the enthusiastic cheerleading of jim lampley etc about there being a NEW middleweight champ of the world and it feeling pretty awesome watching it. I really though kelly would go on to be HUGE and make his mark in america and, well here we are. He is for sure a dissappointment.

 

Somehwat yes but he's still young nad champ so maybe he can redress the situation.

 

I hope that Pavlik can give us some good fights in 2010. Williams and Sturm are the only decent fights at 160. The winner of Bute and Andrade is another that Pavlik should try for.

 

As soon as people start saying "I hope <insert fighter's name here> can give us some good fights in <insert year here>" it's not a good sign, because it indicates:

• no future 'good fights' have been discussed or agreed to by said fighter
• said fighter has recently pulled out of or not been able to seal 'good fights'

 

he's hungry to make up for lost time and he will. he will fight williams. the espino fight only looks fishy if your partially informed and think that's all their was to it. it doesnt seem fishy at all once you realize that the sanctioning bodies told him to fight or be stripped...that this fight was presented to kelly 3 days before he took it...and that he's doing it to keep his belt. he's lost millions of dollars b/c of this injury. he still has his straps and is gradually getting back to 100%.

but to answer the question. of course i'm disappointed. what fan of kelly wouldnt be. i also feel terrible for him. but there is light at the end of the tunnel

 

The thing is, he wasn't exactly the strongest MW champ anyway.

Look who he beat for the title - Taylor. What did Taylor have?

• 2 dubious decison wins over Hopkins
• a draw vs Wright
• an ordinary showing against Ouma, a career LMW moving up who has had 3 losses out of 4 fights since
• an ordinary showing in which he was troubled by Spinks, a LMW who moved up

Look at the manner in which Pavlik beat Taylor for the title - a 7th round KO after a fright in the second round.

Look at the rematch with Taylor - a gunshy Taylor takes Pavlik the distance.

Look at what Taylor has done since - a decision win over a shot Lacy, and 2 KO losses to Froch and Abraham.

Taylor was never all that, he was the beneficiary of circumstance i.e. right place, right time.

The only other big name win on Pavlik's resume is Miranda - who has had 2 losses since fighting Pavlik.

It's pretty much all smoke and mirrors and then Hopkins came along and burst his bubble - Pavlik's insecurity and fear about when it was all going to come to an end must have built exponentially after each fight - Hopkins made it real, which is why he hasn't done much since.

 

injuries/infection (mrsa), multiple surgeries and a reaction to medication landing him in the hospital in bad shape have had nothing to do w/ this past year??

guys who are insecure about when their success don't voluntarily choose to move up 2 weight classes to fight an atg. he's 27 years old and just went through a very very rough stretch. he can turn this around and right the ship.

 

All of which, even if true, have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that who he beat and how he beat them for the title was weak. Like the OP states, he never put his title on the line in the rematch with Taylor.

Conveniently, his title was once again not at risk when he moved up to fight Hopkins, plus he obviously thought the risk-reward in fighting Hopkins was in his favour after seeing Hopkins struggle with Calzaghe.

 

Pavlik isn't the middleweight champion any more in my book. It's a champion-less division at this stage. It's not so much the refusal to take on a decent contender within his divison (or one stepping up from below, for that matter...) but more the excuses...he lost easily to Hopkins and then apparently had the flu, AIDS, cancer, hepatitis and MRSA all at once, which accounted for his defeat.

Then he's due to fight Williams, who is coming up from 154 - a very good fighter, but one who shouldn't scare a man who is supposedly the dominant force at middleweight. Suddenly his hand is about to fall off, then he's seconds away from departing this mortal coil before rising like Jesus on Easter Sunday to pen a contract for a fight against some fringe contender as soon as Williams arranges to fight Martinez.

I hope it comes good for him and he proves the doubters among us wrong - He's a likeable fighter, but scepticism is natural at this point in time.
