Just look at the Cotto fight where Cotto was maimed, injured, beaten to a pulp, and still Manny had serious trouble catching up with him. If he had been intelligently cutting off the ring, he would have stopped the fading Cotto much sooner.
true- he followed cotto instead of stepping sideways to cut off. but i have a feeling its something so obvious that roach will work on it with manny extensively. manny improves between every fight like nobody ever before- at such an old age. he can surely learn cutting off the ring.
I don't doubt that he'll be able to learn to cut off the ring, but it doesn't come naturally, and I doubt he would be able to learn to be as good at it as he'll need to be to catch up to Mayweather. As you said, all he had to do was some side-stepping to cut Cotto off. Cotto was tired and beaten, he just needed to be effectively pressured and he was ready to wilt.

I feel sorry for Floyd, has has no choice but to take the fight - I kind of want to see the fight at a legit 147- actually might work in Pacs favour.. Floyd will be 33 and heavy.. his speed is not the same as a few yrs ago anyway...
