At 154, I take McCallum by clear UD. A case of a talented man above his best weight against a bigger, stronger man.
I think benitez is geting a little bit over rated here, at 154 over 15 rounds i think mccallum comes on strong and wears wilfredo down after about ten close rounds, maybe even stopping him late? i rate mccallum as the 2nd best ever jr middleweight behind the number 1 tito trinidad of course
Based on tito ruined 2 unbeaten fighters who looked on there way to being great champions, and he tuck out the avoided european champion mamadou thiam who was 33 wins 1 loss at the time, and he beat former world title challenger and comenwealth champion troy waters, who if i remember rightly had a war with terry norris before geting stopped both fighters went down, the way tito handled him is a very under rated win for tito
And this equates to him being a greater light middle than McCallum, who beat Jackson, Curry, Mannion, Kalule, McCrory, Minchillo, Braxton and Skouma how exactly? Vargas who was tailor-made for him, Reid who was just a kid and Thiam? 3 fights?
curry and kalue was past there best, when tito beat vargas and reid he tuck both there unbeanten records in devasting fashion which i rate better than beating up fighters who were past there best. Also i have always thought julian jackson was very over rated, i rate vargas better than him, he had a alot more tools than jackson
:? Well, I've disagreed enough with people today. If that's your opinion it's your opinion I suppose.
When I first saw this thread, I immediately thought that Benitez may be too fast. Then I began to think a little more. McCallum would have a significant height and reach advantage. McCallum was also very good technically. McCallum didn't have bone jarring power, but he could get someone's attention. The only thing that kept McCallum from being one of sport's greatest ever, resume aside, was his lack of speed. Benitez had a short lived prime at this weight. Benitez first became a world champion at a record setting age 17, at 140 lbs. I think that Benitez was at his best at 154, while in his early 20's. I'm going to take Benitez by razor thin decision in this fight, be it 12 or 15.
Let me get this right, you reckon Benitez is overrated at 154 because we are picking him over McCallum but you have Tito as the best 154 pounder ever? :rofl
Wow! What a matchup! I like Benitez by close decision, based on the fact he has the better defence. Very, very good fight, in a series of five it'd be 2 apiece and a draw :good
Nope not imo. Kalambay is a different type of mover to Benitez, Kalambay uses more of the ring where as Benitez uses tight little turns, that would not work against McCallum, he would establish the jab and then he would start to hit the body bring his punches up and start finding the head.
Reading some of the replys in this thread it seems people are overlooking something, yes McCallum was hittable despite a good defence, yes he was not the quickest, but what he lacked in speed he made up for in tremendous timing and a great Boxing brain. People are bringing up the Curry fight but Curry got flattened, Mike realized he could not match him for speed so he set him up by feinting to the body and coming straight back over the top, Curry's speed advantage did not count for much then, McCallum was a smart fighter with perfect timing.
Never ever post again. McCallum by far should be rated over Tito at 154, and McCallum would have raped Tito at 154.
Cotto20 has Trinidad as no1 at 154???? ahead of Hearns and McCallum??? I have The Body Snatcher at no1 myself.
You're overlooking a man known as 'El Radar', who, despite not being as dedicated as he was at 140 and (for the most part) 147, is one of the most gifted fighters to ever lace up a glove. Look at my post to gauge how close I think it is. There's no disgrace in a majority pickfor Benitez though, it's a damn close matchup. Ask 100 people and I bet it'd average out :good
