no, i don't think Pavlik would beat Calzaghe or Ward. Kessler couldn't have fought that version of JT, weights didn't matchup.

Pavlik was in a bad spot, though, and JT was looking as good as he ever had, he had a ton of confidence, he has had none lately, and Pavlik was in dire straits. He battled and won. Kessler hasn't shown any characteristics that he can battle through a rough patch and still remain competitive. Any step up in class and he's been thoroughly beaten.

Actually, even this broke down version of JT can very well beat Kessler.

No, someone as limited as Jeff Lacy looked halfway decent against THIS Taylor and knocked him on his ass. THIS Taylor.

Yeah because there a difference between that Taylor and the Taylor from the 3 previous fights.
Newsflash it's the same ****ing Taylor.

When will people realize that Taylor wasn't that good to begin with.

A good point, even though I still think Pavilik is more complete than Kessler.

Taylor was very sharp early vs Pavlik. He handed Pavlik his career on a platter that night. His stamina issues were exposed. But, i suppose, if Taylor wasn't that good to begin with, Pavlik hasn't actually ever beaten anyone of consequence.

I'd go with Pavlik. He has the better jab and a great right....plus I think he still has room to grow, while we've pretty much seen everything Kessler has to offer. Kessler has shown an inability to adjust his game plan, but he has shown the ability to get frustrated and wilt. Both their resumes are equally spotty, Pavlik beat Taylor 2x(who was way better back then....Pavlik's KO was actually the beginning of his downfall) and lost to Hopkins while Kessler has lost to Calzaghe(no sin of course), but other than that not much. We should have a better handle on this question in a year.

Neither is complete that is for sure.

More complete is very difficult to say, they more or less excel in the same areas in terms of they have good jabs, good straight punching, good power, good chins. Maybe I'd give Kessler an edge down to athleticism rather than anything on a technical level, though I do think he's a little more refined than Pavlik in foot movement, Pavlik lumbers around quite ungainly in the ring.

One thing Pavlik has is the ability to turn a jab into a hook at the last moment, Kessler has the most round house left hook in history which is just horrible to look at.

Kessler. Pavlik is limited, but very good at what he does: stiff, super-accurate jab; powerful straight right; consistent work rate; solid chin and a big heart; goes to the body well when he gets you on the ropes. He's basically a fundamentally sound, well-educated pressure fighter. On the other hand, his defence is adequate but basic; he doesn't make a habit of counter-punching much; and he doesn't really move from side-to-side.

Kessler, the Ward fight aside, has a much more versatile arsenal. I'm starting to think his jab is actually worse than Pavlik's and his power is probably only the same in absolute terms (less in P4P terms). But in other areas he makes up for it: he can put together 3, 4, 5, 6-punch combinations where Pavlik sticks to 2 or 3 well-placed power shots at a time; he can move well; he's a very good counter-puncher against the right kind of opponent; he uses pretty much every punch there is liberally.

Kessler is the more complete fighter, though he appears to have decayed a lot, and I think a fight between them now would be much more close and very possibly a W for KP.

Do you honestly believe that the Taylor who couldn't throw a punch after round 8 vs. Froch, had no power, no chin, no self-confidence, whose counter-punching ability was all but in the trash, who couldn't throw much more than a looping right hand and a pawing jab, whose head movement had gone to pot - that version of Taylor was the same that fought Hopkins?
