Anyone here a fan of Sol Chitalada or Myung-woo Yuh?

Only three fights of his on youtube. Tokushima, Bahar Udin, and against Ioka. I'm watching Tokushima, he's scored like 4-5 knockdowns...and this kid is just about be stopped by body shots. Very impressive display of body punching...and defense, nobody mentioned how good a defensive fighter Yuh is, but he's slipping a lot, and taking most on his arms. He kind of reminds me a bit like Duran, who rarely gets hit clean despite being so offensive minded. Same thing with Yuh.

 

Man, this fight should have been stopped. Goes down again, gets buckled really badly as the bell sounds for the end of the 6th. Brutal beating to be honest.

 

Finally! The referee stops it. Amazing display from Yuh. His right hand was landing a lot more after Tokushima became so battered to the body. Should have been stopped as early as the 5th round to be honest.

 

Gushiken is a bad ass looking mofo, no doubt about it.

Goodjob Yuh weren't a huge puncher, it'd hardly be fair on the rest of the division.

 

All i have of Yuh is his 2 fights with Gamaz who was a no bad fighter and they was 2 good fights.

I think RB has some Yuh fights.

 

RB does, i had one off him, can't remember the opponent's name but it was a taller black guy if i'm right, Yuh puts in a methodical performance that's not too different from a Chavez type one, pays off around the 11th i think.

Really big admirer, not a snappy Puncher bit a solid one with a good defence and a consistent offence.

Interesting tidbit about Hilario Zapata in Ring, March 1984; 'had just finished serving a prison sentence for hitting his Mother during an argument'

Yep, RB is the man to go to, got about five Yuh fights off of him, all good quality.

 

That pic with the afro is the only decent one i can find though.

 

I've never been too high on Yuh i've got to say.Though he is the kind of fighter i enjoy watching..schooled textbook box-fighter that uses technique to overcome no obvious physical strengths, guys like Accavallo, Kingpetch, Kalule, Davila, Gushiken etc..Yuh was more of a steady technically sound pressure fighter than those guys though.

He was certainly a very good solid fighter, yet the way he struggled and got hit far more when the opposition kicked up from mediocre to decent has always gave me doubts about him.Gamez, Dejesus, Olivo..usually struggles where he had to really grind and getrs hit far more than against the lower level fighters, where being very technically sound is enough, despite a relative lack of reflexes and physical tools.

His power looks deceiving against some of those fighters because he works the body well and often, so his consistent attack is enough to wear down lesser talents.A lot of the time his punches had little on them, especially to the head, and he actually had the reputation at the time in Korea as a guy with no real power at all, though i think that's exaggerating it to be honest.


On the plus side, he's mostly very technically sound, with great stamina, workrate and a terrific chin.He would match up really well with Carbajal imo, and to a lesser extent Chiquita as well.He'd be a near lock over the likes of Alvarez and German Torres too.

I can't see him beating Gushiken, Chang or Zapata.The domestic rivaltry with Chang would be an awesome backdrop and can bring a different element to fights, but i'd be surprised if the fight was particularly competitive with both at their best.Chang would beat him to the punch consistently from every distance and win a lopsided decision.If he comes in out of shape then it's a different story though, Yuh was vastly the more dedicated of the two.


That's just my take on things though.I know Raging Bull rates Yuh highly as well and thinkgs a chang fight would be closer than i do.

 

I have a tape from years ago with Yuh and Chang fights on it. I have Yuh vs DeMarco, Tunon and Blanco and Chang vs Chitlada, Ohashi and Zapata 2. Now I have no video player to watch them on!! I need to get them transferred to DVD asap. Admittedly the quality is not brilliant but they are certainly watchable.

On a seperate note why did Chang and Yuh not fight? The fight would of been HUGE in Korea. I seem to remember reading something at the time about them having different promoters.

 

Apparently there wasn't much demand for it, as Chang was more established and considered the much more high profile, better fighter.By the time Yuh got going, Chang was partying himself into the ground.

Also boxing is a lot more nationalistic in countries like Thailand, japan and Korea in a lot of respects.Having as many champs as possible was probably seen as at at least as desirable, than a big domestic showdown, though no doubt the fighters would have been up for it.
