Just a question I was pondering after the Bute fight, considering someone like Hagler or Ali or maybe Abraham who can be hit by an anvil and not go down vs. someone that can just be touched in the right way and go out.
Just looking for some discussion...... maybe some boxers can chime in too.

Well if you're born with a chin and also train it it definetely can be great.

If you just train it without having iot naturally won't help much.

Well I believe some are born with great chins but also I believe if a fighter is struggling to make the weight his ability to take a punch wont be great if you know what I mean.

surely strengthening the neck muscles has to help to be able to resist the snap effect which obviously can be trained

Your momma, daddy, weight training and punch-avoiding techniques make your punch resistence.

Like punching power there is a lot of natural ablity involved. However like punching power "chin" can be improved through training and stringht in the right places. Like the neck, core and legs.

I don't think chin can be improved. So, I'd go with born. However, you can improve your confidence and comfort level in the ring...and that has a lot to do with how you perform. A good example of this is Wladimir Klitschko. Clearly, the man does not have a great chin. But, his chin problems were compounded and exasperated by the fact that he seemed to panic every time he got hit square. That was clearly a confidence issue. Sometimes that can be corrected or at least concealed. Wlad has done a better job of not panicing as much when he gets hit over the past 4 years.

On the opposite site of the spectrum, you have Jermaine Taylor. Taylor seems to have the same afflictin as Wlad. He tends to panic and make poor decisions when he gets hurt. Unlike Wlad, however, he has not addressed this issue. I remember watching the Palvik and the Froch fight and thinking, "What is he doing?" In both fights when Taylor was hurt he backed straight up into the rops with his head in the air, instead of holding on. He made the worst decision he could have possibly made, and it cost him both fights.

Lots of things are involved; neck muscles, balance, rolling with punches, hydration, et.

You can't train a Chin. Period. A lot of it is mental. Jake LaMotta and Aaron Pryor both said they told themselves before a fight that they were not going to get knocked out.

It's a natural born gift to an extent, but you can improve it by taking shots in the gym and with hard physical conditioning. Even Lamon Brewster and Tua have been sparked with headgear on, and we all know Manny Pacquaio was koed by smaller fighters when he was a kid.

this is what I was thinking about Andrade, he should have held and got his head together, then thought about fighting again. I never thought he could win that fight but he at least could have had a little more time to land a shot of his own.
