Folks, I just found my tape of "Holmes-Smith 2" from 1999 which was shown on a lesser PPV outlet for 20 USA bucks back then....... thumbsup The card was actually worth the Andrew Jackson it had cost.......:yep 1. "LaPorte-Costello" was a silly catch-weight fight, but entertaining. 2. "Page-Spoon 2" saw Greg Page get revenge 15 yrs later from a pitiful Spoon... :rofl 3. "Holmes-Smith 2" was good ole boxing between two aging ex-champs looking for a last title shot that never materialized for either guy....... Holmes was soft but in-shape at 250 pounds, while Bonecrusher Smith CLAIMED he trained hard by coming down from over 300 pounds to weigh-in at 275......... :dead Holmes beat the snot outta Smith---AGAIN!!!:good Smith claimed he threw-out his shoulder in round 8, but it looked like Holmes was closing in on Smith and about to bomb him out when Smith's boys tossed in the towel........ Smith was saved from being a canvas kisser........ :admin MR.BILL:hat
Holmes at 250 looks like he normally does or did, but just bigger all around the strike-zone area........... Bonecrusher Smith looks liks a slob at 275 pounds........ Its bad............ Smith once had a great build with muscles when he was in his prime in 1985 / '86 and fighting between 227 to 245 pounds......... the 275 in 1999 was just horrid / gross looking............ MR.BILL
Old Holmes scored a nice one punch KO over Mike Weaver as well. Atleast these old men didn't have any delusional ideas of facing world class young contenders again. They should match up Holyfield, Mercer, McCall with each other in case they don't want to retire. I guess Holyfield vs Botha is a step in the right direction.
I missed "Holmes-Weaver 2." In fact, I'm not even sure that made my local cable company in Illinois at the time of 2000 or so.?.? I was back in California in 2002 for "Holmes-Bean" on PPV...... It was a decent scrape for 20 bucks.... I did that PPV and have the tape as well....... "Holy-Botha" is cool with me........... I only hope that Botha trains and is not a slob coming in......... Holy is always in-shape, even ata ge 47....... MR.BILL
There was a similar "Legends of Wrestling" event in 1999, with Greg Valentine and a clearly coked-up Jake "The Snake" Roberts making appearances. Iron Maiden had a reunion. In general, it was a year for the old-timers. Holmes, by this point, was just delaying an inevitable entry into the Hall of Fame. I supposed someone had to for the fight to happen.
True....... But Holmes was paid a cool "Million" bucks to hammer Lazy Bones Smith in 1999........ Smith was paid a decent 250K for being a punching bag............. :deal MR.BILL:bbb MR.BILL
I swear to Christ, fighters from Carolina like Smith and Calvin Brock are like invisible ghosts here in 2009........ When was the last time them dudes stepped out into public????? Boncrusher Smith back in 1999 at 275 pounds against the 250 pound Holmes had them gross looking man-boobs sagging...... Smith was bald and wearing red trunks TRYING to pose and act like George Foreman.... It was weak........ MR.BILL:bbb
I am only around an hour and a half from Fayetteville, NC. I saw the fight live. I think I paid around $100 for a ringside seat.
For this bout to have been scheduled as an actual professional fight, was both ridiculous and unnecessary. The two of them could have just as easily put on head gear and sold this meeting as an exhibition.
I live in the shitty of Raleigh nowadays, but I really stem from Los Angeles........... I was livin' and workin' in Joliet back in '99 when "Holmes-Smith 2" took place........ I paid 20 bucks for the PPV............ BOTH "Bones Smith" and "Tim Spoon" fought on this card with Larry Holmes and Greg Page in seperate fights.......... Smith and Spoon were horrible in their efforts against Larry and Greg............ I think "Holmes-Page" in 1999 would've been interesting.... Not really meaningful as it would've been in 1984, but still interesting........ MR.BILL
Chris, Smith has a basic degree and is a smart / likable man........ Brock was / is a bank teller or employed by a bank............... Still, in the local sports bars in town, NOBODY here in Carolina ever speaks about them dudes...... Nobody cares............ I hate Carolina, but I'm here---for the time being........... Los Angeles is my real HOME!! MR.BILLbbb
That's because most of North Carolina's residence are not originally from that area. My friend and his wife are from Chicago and moved down there about 5 years ago to take new jobs and build a new house in the Raleigh area. The market for skilled professionals along with a lower cost - high quality of living is prevalent down there right now. The population in the Carolina states has quadrupled in like the last decade, and its mostly young folks. Anyway, most of our generation in America has all but forgotten about boxing, and certainly don't know who the hell a guy like Bonecrusher is.. Not to mention, black men with names like James Smith aren't particularly uncommon in the southern United States....
