It actually would be awesome for 2 great legends at the end of their careers to give the fans that loved them for all these years, one last big performance on the biggest ever stage in the history of boxing. If I'm Hopkins or Jones, it sure don't sound that bad afterall...
It will probably involve Valero but I don't want to see him on the immediate undercard... With a little good will, Pavlik-Williams could certainly be made and agreed for such a huge event.
I've been saying this since Mayweather/Hoya, almost every mega fight has bull**** undercards. Solid undercards would be great for the sport and there's enough money involved here to put some quality undercards togather. The problem is that promoters like Arum and GDP are thinking short term profits instead of the future. Top Rank and GBP know that people who will order the Floyd/Pacquiao PPV are doing so because of the main event. even if they would put williams/pavlik on the undercard it wouldnt generate more PPV sales. they would rather make williams/pavlik its own PPV event and generate more PVV revenue that way. here reducing costs by having cheap bull**** undercards is the more profitable short term business strategy but it really hurts the sport as a whole.
My Ideal card (that's reasonable and in context to the promoters involved) Diaz-Valero (Diaz is Mexican/American fighter who's popular in Texas and fight's for G.B. and Valero is the exciting T.R. fighter who is licensed in Texas. Not to mention that the action would be immense.) Margarito-Hlatshwayo (Margarito a T.R. fighter who could make his comeback in front of a large Mexican crowd against Hlatshwayo who holds Margarito's former IBF belt that he vacated to fight Cotto.) Bika-Miranda (With the amount of attention that the 168 lb division is getting these days it would be well served to feature a relevant super middle weight fight on this card. This fight probably would produce the most fireworks of the evening, which is saying a lot considering the amount of action fighters involved, and is doable because Bika is a G.B. fighter.) Donaire-Darchinyan (Long awaited rematch that works with Donaire fighting on T.P. and the contingent of Filipinos that figure to make up a large portion of the crowd.)
100% true but at the same time, a promoter with confidence in his fighter and a broad perspective for the future, knowing what such coverage could mean for his boxer, would certainly want to take the chance by putting him in there... Pacquiao won't fight much longer for Arum and if Bob believes in Pavlik for the future...he certainly should put Pav in there. That event could instantly make Pavlik...5 times the star he became after his 1st Taylor bout !!
You, my friend, are right on the money. I remember feeling ashamed and embarassed due to the horrendous undercard of Pac/Cotto because I had friends over to watch Yuri Foreman bounce around the ring like a ****** and Juli-NO Caesar Chavez JR induce a coma not in his combatitant, but in the viewership.
Most likely they'll put a crappy ass undercard on that night as they usually do. I hope they at least put quality fighters on it though, even if there not big names. It's fun just to have good fighters meeting eachother in the ring and not just prospects versus bums.
yeah and they sometimes do that by having undercards with good prospects such as lara and korobov. but most of the time these young prospects are too green and are just matched with scubs, this doesnt create much excitement. they should showcase their maturing prospects with competative opponents. I think giving williams and pavlik 2 to 3 mill each and placing them on the undercard for mayweather/pacquiao would still be a good promotional investment when you consider the exposure and rise in popularity they(or at least oneo of the fighters) would recieve.
if i were mosely i would take any amount of money to get on the undercard- thereby setting him up perfectly to fight the winner
**** Darchinyan X Donaire II, we all know Darchinyan is one of the most overrated fighters out there. Now, Nonito Donaire X Yonnhy Perez would be awesome!
