I like Schmeling by a UD. Max was mostly always fit & boxed smart. Witherspoon was a talented underacheiver who rarely knew what top form was.
I like Maxie, but no ****ing way he beats a motivated Timmy Spoon in a time machine....... Spoon of 1983 / '84, even with a loss to Holmes & Pinky Thomas, is just too much for the smaller and weaker Max Schmeling........ Spoon too strong and piles up points by backing Schmeling up throughout......... MR.BILL Schmeling's right was wicked for a dude 190 to 200 pounds, but not nearly as hard as Bones Smith in 1986......... Cheers.......:-(
Any thoughts here about Max's chin? Witherspoon could ****ing bang with that right... Mercer said he hit him harder then Lewis did. I can believe that considering Mercer had Lennox backing up the majority of that fight, and that Witherspoon actually hit Mercer so hard over the course of their fight that Mercer was lifted off his feet.
I thought Spoon deserved the win, or at least a ****ing draw with Mercer in '96....... The loss over 10 rds was bull****.......... Spoon nailed Mercer with some wicked ****........ YES! Mercer owned a jawbone back then, but he was slightly out-boxed by the OLDER Spoon................. IMO!!! MR.BILLbbb:rasta:nono
But it was thrown with better tioming and accuracy and slightly faster. Overall more dangerous I think. Witherspoon at his best was very good. Schmeling was great. Witherspoon had a size advantage but best for best he wasn´t much bigger than some of Schmeling´s opponents - in the early 80s he weighed in under 210 pounds just like Neusel, Uzcudun, Sharkey. The size advantage wouldn´t be big enough to make a difference. Either Schmeling UD or late TKO.
It took Max Baer 10 rounds to get Schmeling out of there, and i think Baer hit as hard (or harder than) Witherspoon. So Schmeling can certainly take the punishment for more than a few rounds. And he was a good puncher and very good boxer in his own right. Whether or not he'd beat the best of Witherspoon (eg. of the Holmes fight) is hard to say. Definitely a 50-50 fight in my eyes.
Ok in a historic sense maybe Schmeling gets the edge but we are talking head to head matchup here and If Witherspoon was fighting 185 pound heavyweights(average hvy in that time) Witherspoon would be knocking guys out just like Baer and hes Technichaly superior to Baer so the comparisons arent accurate. Witherspoon was a big puncher as a 80s and 90s heavy hed be a monsterous puncher in the late 20s early 30s. In Schmelings prime he was 6-1 192 to Witherspoons 6-3 215 to 235. If gypsy daniels and larry gains could stop Schmeling than Witherspoon could too.
Could of course but would it be the likely outcome? In his best time Witherspoon weighed in under or around 210 pounds. Guess what Schmeling beat world class fighters around that weight in Uzcudun and Neusel. Witherspoon wouldn´t be that much bigger than Schmeling. Witherspoon is not as durable was Baer and does not hit as hard, watch the fight up to the stoppage it´s competative and around even on the cards. Witherspoon at his best was a very good fighter but really better than Schmeling at his best? the only thing he has going for him is a size advantage but it isn´t as big as some of you guys seem to think and Schmeling beat similar world class guys who were as big as him. Add to that that Schmeling was the more disciplined fighter with better timing, accuracy and handspeed, possibly better or at least equal power ... I wouldn´t pick against him in this fight.
I never saw Spoon fight at 210 or less ... I say the Spoon who foguth Holmes decisions Max who did have a terrific chin. The shots he took from Baer before folding were unreal ..
Witherspoon weighed 215 against Holmes and 235 when he kod Bruno. The Witherspoon that weighed 210 or less was just a prospect at the time. To me Baer was very crude and with that style (despite his power) would not be a top heavy today. Witherspoon was pretty durable only the huge punching and Big man Bonecrusher ever stopped him in Witherspoons prime. The bigmen of those days Uzcudan and Neusel would be lucky to crack todays top 20. There were not any bigmen with the skills of todays bigmen. Schmeling would be a great cruiser today but he wouldnt beat a guy like Witherspoon. Ive seen lots of footage on Schmeling and i just cant see him taking Witherspoon.
