With the way things have done with their careers I don't think people would have given Calzaghe much more credit for fighting Pavlik or Taylor instead of Jones. Pavlik lost to Hops and Taylor getting flattened by Froch and AA it means a win over him would be worth less to the haters than the Kessler win is after Ward beat him.

    "Styles"....;)

I agree with you in regards to Taylor, but do you remember all the praise Hopkins got for whitewashing Pavlik? That could have been Calzaghe getting that praise.

Until Pavlik loses again....;). Calzaghe got begrudging respect for Kessler but then, 2 years later, someone beats Kessler and "poof!" its all gone up in smoke according to some people.

Calzaghes record isn't the best quality wise but when people try and take the Hopkins win away from him it just shows they are posting with an agenda rather than properly evaluating a career.

    Beating Hopkins was alright.

But when you put it into perspective that it was up there with Kessler as his best performance against a quality opponent, it puts this ATG legend bull**** into perspective. He was an old man FFS, nearly 43 yrs old.

Also, Kessler losing to Ward doesn't demean Calzaghe's win much for me. Kessler was a durable long reigning champion with dozens of title defences. But it does show that even the best of Calzaghe's opponents were ultimately beatable by average fighters of their generation.

You analyse any part of Calzaghe's career and it is hardly the record of an outstanding great. Put together it looks good but it is fraudulent.

I remember Calzaghe taunting RJJ by leaving his chin unguarded and smirking - and thinking - ten years ago he would have put you in a coma for that.

RJJ was gone long before last night.

Given the length of his career his level of opposition (esp. pre Lacy and Kessler) on the whole was disappointing but not appauling.

I'm not sure where "fraudulent" fits in though, it totally depends what claims are being made about in the first place.

I think few people gave him credit for beating Jones anyway. Personally I thought Jones was more than done years ago. I never gave Joe's victory over him any credit, so for me... it's hard to take credit away from Joe when I never gave him any for beating Jones in the first place.

You're joking, right? The SMW division was the ****ing wild west while Calzaghe "Reigned". Gunslingers were roaming all over the damn place! Marcus Beyer and Eric Lucas were tossing belts around like a hot potato, Sven Ottke was living the undefeated life of a champion... All the while Calzaghe clutched onto the worthless WBO.

Now Hopkins at MW and Jones at LHW. They were the sheriffs.

Just finished watching Hopkins tonight and even at nearly 45 years old he's still an exceptional fighter.

That was a GREAT win for Calzaghe.

C'mon that was a tune up fight. It was the equivalent of Roy Jones beating Hanshaw at best.

For someone to beat Hopkins today they'd have to put in the performance of their lives.

Even tho its a tune up,you can still tell he's an amazing fighter.

Really, in the end it just looked like a tune up fight to me against a plucky but low grade opponent.
