Could I really bet against Williams here? I don't see why I'd have to. Now Chavez was very good in his own right, but Williams at his best was something special and only a sliver short of Robinson-level greatness. Williams was quite happy and content to stalk, box and score points on fighters who weren't considered a threat. Because he could. The ones who provoked him normally ended up smelling the salts to bring them round. As one of the premier punchers in history, you'd have to say Williams' punching should be enough to crack even Chavez' jaw if it got serious enough. I can see Williams landing quick, accurate and powerful uppercuts that would slow Chavez down, if not take him out, over the course of the fight. Williams, though hittable at times, had a solid jaw in which I'd have faith weathering all incoming punches.
I feel Chavez is clearly outmatched here. Both great inside fighters, while Williams is an overall superior technician . It would be a war, but Chavez would get the worst of it. Ike gives a lesson in the art of systematic butchery as he grinds Julio down for a late KO.
I'd go Duran. Even then it's a longshot. The guy has a brilliant chin and the offense to punish risk takers.
Williams is a top 5 lightweight and excellent puncher good at everything else but i think you are underestimating Chavezs technichal skills he was a pressure fighter but did so in a technichal matter. I think its the other way around Chavez gets the edge as the overall superior technichian here it would be a war but no way in hell does he stop Chaveznono 95 guys went the distance with Ike and your trying to tell me he kos Chavezatsch Dont tell me about Ikes power i am very aware that even though he didnt sport the greates ko% he could still punch. This would be a war and a very grueling fight for Chavez,after about 12 closely contested rounds . Chavez pours it on in the 13th, then stops Ike in 14.

His fight with Beau Jack is an easy one to start with. I say Williams wins on points. He has the all-round game to have an answer for whatever Chavez brings, and the power/durability to stay in there and keep Chavez smart. Williams is no Rosario, and isn't going to go into panic mode when Chavez walks through everything he throws. I say Williams hurts Chavez at least once and wins a close decision. There would be rounds when Chavez's strength would keep Williams from doing anything too effective, but then again, this is the man who fought Kid Gavilan (!!!!) and dropped him. :deal
you feel Ayala isn't outmatched against the likes of Julian jackson, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns and other decent 154lbers but Chavez is 'clearly outmatched' against Williams??!!??!?!
williams takes a ud, fast hurtful combo's make it hard for chavez to pressure as he would like although i say ud some of the rounds maybe close but williams superior hand and foot speed gives him enough of an edge to take most of the closer rounds and the fast hands of williams although i dont think would hurt chavez enough to stop him with power chavez may suffer some bad cuts but i would say williams 9-5 and one even
I respect both of these boxers immensely. I feel very confident that Chavez would systematically break Williams down, particularly to the body. Chavez short punches, mixing body and head, and his remarkable durability are the perfect blend of attributes to do the job on Williams.
