Well don't tell us about how much credit Danny Green thinks he might deserve. He just knocked out a shot to peices Roy Jones Jr. What the hell does he want for it? A medal? "You beat a legend you become a legend". Yeah...right.
How about you go back and read my original post. I said he deserves a little credit. No one gave him a chance yet he won hence my saying he deserves a little credit. I dont believe that beating a legend crap and maybe if you learnt to read you would see I never said anything about that.
I thought Green could potentially be a mistake from the beginning. I know most people (and probably Roy himself) figured Green to be another "Lacy-esque" opponent (and on paper, he probably only rates about on par with Lacy), but the thing that people overlooked is that Green has fairly quick hands. His feet and reflexes are slow, so Roy could potentially outbox him for as long as he could keep the fight on the outside, but it didn't surprise me to see Green sneak in a quick punch and do what he did. What I find funny is that all of Roy's decisive defeats have been to 35/36-year old veterans, not young turks on the way up. Maybe that age group carries a jinx for Roy? :conf
I think he deserves some measure of credit as he is an old man himself and past his own prime as well. It's not like he came into this with a big advantage in youth on his side.
Never been a fan of Roy's, and I've always thought that, however impressive his victories over Toney and Ruiz were, that he was horrenously overrated...the thing he obviously lacked in his makeup was any kind of ruggedness...he pales in comparison to SRR, whose combination of toughness and raw power would have been too much for Roy, or for that matter SRL..or Floyd Mayweather. I also believe that legendary champs such as Monzon, and Foster and Spinks to name just a few, would havefound that delicate chin or temple and turned his lights out.
His chin was untested. That was the sort of remark I remember people making years back. But looking at his amateur and professional career upto the Ruiz fight, how was it ever obvious that he couldn't take a heavy shot?
How could it have been made obvious when no one could tag him? His great speed and reflexes kept him safe...that and his steady diet of postman and policeman who dabbled in their off hours as fighters. He looked superb vs Toney, and had too much on the ball for Hopkins at the time...and let's face it, Ruiz didn't have a very menacing arsenal at his very best...so when Roy started slowing down a tad, we found out that he couldnt take it very well...a fact that keeps him from being classed with Ray Robinson, for one. It always made me laugh to hear about all that **** on how Roy would beat guys like Monzon and Foster...both would have lost rounds and would have been made to look bad for stretches, but the sheer class and greatness of both of those guys would have surfaced well within the 15 round distance..Monzon's right, Foster's left..and it would have been "goodnight Mr. Jones".
Jones realistically was a 160-168 pounder, maybe fight time he was close to 175 tops. The guys hes was fighting at 175 were close to 200 fight time. He got tagged pretty good at times, even by Ruiz a couple times. I dont think his chin was as bad as it is now. I think some fighters just lose their ability to take punches just as they lose speed and timing. Simple fact is he got old. Not to many fighters can defy the age factor, and generally 34-35 is it.
So it wasn't always obvious. It only became obvious when he started getting sparked by contenders ,after he came down from heavyweight. I was just wondering whether anyone here had spotted any signs of fragility earlier in his career. After all just because a guy is good at not getting hit-doesn't necessarily mean he can't take a punch.
No it doesn't. By the same token, it doesn't mean he can take a shot either. So it's unresolved or a question mark.
Not really. I would say that Lou DelValle hit him as cleanly as Antonio Tarver did, but Im not sure who punched harder, neither had stellar KO percentages, but both landed with very clean shots. Jones went down hard against Del Valle and shook it off pretty good. Ruiz shook him with one decent shot, but other than that, it points to general ageing as far as Im concerned, and Im sure what he put his body through, coming down from heavy, was a factor and sped up the process to shotsville. It was almost comical to see Jones with this massive upper body on his legs that didnt get any bigger.
