My late grandad always said that he was both sad and angry at the way these two favourites of his became forgotten in recent years by general boxing audiences, especially Jackie, for whom this beatdown was the beginning of the end following years of killing himself to make the flyweight limit (he looks massive here) and squandering thousands on grog and gambling. For what it's worth, Monaghan looked terrific here, fighting a clever fight and wearing the already weight-drained Paterson down with clever pressure. He wasn't a big hitter but was strong, and the ending here is a bit brutal to say the least. Paterson does well to actually get up at all from that first knockdown. Their previous split bouts were much closer than this one where everything was at stake.

Rinty of course wound up having to pack in his early 30's through lung trouble while he was still champ after a couple of defenses. He fared better than Paterson did in retirement but still got hounded by the taxman and wound up struggling to make ends meet. He was a lovable character though and a typical Paddy. My grandad, stubborn old git that he was, never took to Barry McGuigan during or after his career; he seemed to think it would've been a bit of a middle finger up to Monaghan, who he always said was better in his prime than McGuigan was.

I watched that video i while back. don't know if you've seen this but i enjoyed it, made me laugh. Monaghan talking about his career and along with Johnny Caldwell talking about the modern game and a young Barry McGuigan.

Cheers Al, I was thinking you might weigh in on this one. I watched this vid a while back. Quality. Made my old grandad laugh and agree vehemently. He liked Johnny Caldwell quite a bit too. And your dad; he always thought he would have cleaned up today's lot :D or at least won a world title in any other era.

I agree with you that Rinty looked pretty sharp. I also think it's fair to say that his pressure was pretty smart - though having said that, did Patteson have to give quite so much ground? Althought Rinty looked good, Patterson looked dead in there to me. Even when Rinty slipped he couldn't react. He looked terrible. Can't believe that's anything like a fair reflection.

Glad the video included the singing at the end. He did this win, lose or draw supposedly.

You would have thought a puncher of Paterson's calibre would be more willing to press the action as opposed to circling away wouldn't you? The weight loss has to have something to do with it, not being able to pull the trigger. Rinty wasn't really a big hitter either, but old Jackie looked like he had no resistance. Sad end.

The singing's top. Earned him a few quid when he fell on hard times I've been told. He was a good snooker player too apparently (not that it's relevant).

Rinty had a pretty good record. Im pretty sure he held 5 titles at the same time which was unheard off then nevermind now. Ol' johnny caldwell just passed away a few months back about the time that Arguello,Gatti and Forrest died. McGuigan gave them all a write-up in the newspaper, and rightly so, but never gave Caldwell a mention which i thought was disgraceful, especially as he would have been well aware of his exploits having trained under eddie shaw. I think Caldwells world title win over Halimi was his first at that weight

That is bad that he never mentioned Caldwell. I think your right. when Caldwell beat Halimi, a real tough fighter and proven at world class John was actually a flyweight.

Aye, disgrace. Caldwell was perhaps the out and out best of them.

I tend to think that he was. But coming along at the same time as Jofre didn't really help his cause. Same curse as Winstone and Buchanan.
