Lytell always gets left out. What do you all think about Cocoa Kid's domination of Holman Williams? In terms of quality of fighters beaten, not many guys are even pipping Williams, but CK handled him over their lengthy series.
Why so little film of Burley? It's not like the ink on Lumiere's patents was still wet when he was active.
Aye, but we're spoiled brats aren't we? You could easily pack a DVD with footage of guys like Marco Rubio for instance, and that's just counting his national TV appearances! Yet one solitary outing for Burley. :verysad Was he popular during his day or one of those figures whose legend grew posthumously? Was there just no wide demand to see him (contradicts him being avoided; though I'm aware the boxing public's perception doesn't always align with that of the boxing fraternity)? How many times was he televised? The medium was young, noted, but available throughout his career.
Burley was nobody. At the box office, Burley was a nobody. He couldn't even draw against a 220lb HW. Nobody gave a **** about him. He was a sideshow, a preliminary. I forget the figure, but the most he ever made for a fight was something like 2k.
I just noticed that said film is publicly available - in its longer form - thanks to none other than yourself. Certainly your generosity is appreciated. It's just a shame there isn't more to share. :good
It would be interesting to know who wore the cuffs/took dives, we judge these fighters by results but if a good number of those results were dives, it makes it quite difficult to judge them
As said, Burley-Smith is on Youtube. There's footage of Bivins against Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore, Billy Smith against Moore, and Marshall against Charles. Some of those are on youtube as well I believe. Bivins has the distinction of having been the #1 contender at both 175 and heavyweight at the same time. Unfortunately, the champions at both weight classes (Lesnevich and Louis respectively) were both serving in WW2, and the titles were frozen - and Bivins had beaten Lesnevich just before he entered the service. During that time, Bivins whupped both Moore (by KO) and Charles, who were both on the way up. By the time the champs came out of the army though, Bivins (as well as most other Murderers Row members) were past their peaks. Bivins later lost multiple rematches to Charles and Moore when both were at their peaks and he was past his.
I think there's even more footage of the three, although less so of Lloyd Marshall. I've heard people say they've watched his late fights against Don Cockell (where Marshall was a shell of himself) and I do know someone who actually watched the fight live. Yes, as a matter of fact, I have Marshall's KO of Freddie Mills and Billy Smith's KO of Harold Johnson on tape, and a few other clips of them here and there.
