Pavlik is the type of fighter Steward is very good at working with in recent times. Would have been good for him, but I don't think he'll ever get away from Loew or the dozen or so skin-head looking fools on his team. Kessler would be good with Manny but I'm not too sure Mikkel has a lot left, unfortunately.

    True to an extent.

I think there is a tendency to assume that because BHop, a noted great, exposed Pavlik's limitations to a such a glaring extent any talented boxer could and would do the same. I think that may be a bit of a stretch.

Not gonna happen so why even suggest it? Kelly has been asked and points to some others that changed coaches late in the game, like Hatton. I really don't know enough about it to hazard an intelligent opinion on this one to be perfectly honest. In the end, boxing is an art, forget the 'sweet science' crap. Good only for marketing. You can study all you want, but being able to execute what you need on the fly is an art. Why would so many boxers ignore corner advice otherwise? One thing for the guy in the corner to say it. He isn't the one getting punched in the face or KO'd.

I'm sure over his 20+ years of coaching Jack has pretty much seen it all. I really urge people to get the tape of the Duddy/Lyell fight. You hear Jack throughout because the announcer must be close to his corner. You don't hear 'double jab' one time. Different fighter, different opponent, different fight. There was NOTHING he could have told Kelly that night against Bhop that would have made a difference. If anything, his failure was letting/not being able to stop the fight from happening in the first place. I could tell from his demeanor on local tv that he wasn't thrilled to take that fight to start with. Then throw in the 'other stuff'. I'm not willing to say his failure that night was in his cornering abilities.

We just have to disagree on him. If he had a little more hype, and a decent fanbase attached to him, his style, speed would allow him to beat the **** out of some really good fighters. But we'll never know because he just doesn't get top billing enough to draw some of these fights.

Nothing would have saved Pavlik from Hopkins, aside from not signing for the fight. They expected to walk in and steamroll Hopkins. They thought they were gonna be the first ones to lay him out on the canvas. They never knew what hit them that night, as they came up against a bonafide legend who had their number down to a tee. You may call boxing an art, but Bernard used some science-like precision that night.

Martinez is very good, but he still isn't Bernard. Martinez gets hit more in one fight than Bernard does in a decade. There is a huge difference between them.

Still agree Martinez has a style to cause Pavlik problems.

Exactly, Herm! And that's the problem.

His usually highly effective jab-right hand tactic being taken away, there was little Pavlik could do, and that's why he should get someone who could teach him other things.

    Fair enough, dude.

Much of what you say has some merit, particularly with respect to Martinez getting a little promotion. I think the kid is good.

I also think Williams won the fight.
(I am sure I'll be blasted by the Euros for this one-- cuz you know we Americans always get the decision. Just ask Hopkins. :blood)

Sure. Take ONE line out of context and that explains it all. Never mind....

1st off, lets not compare Williams power to Pavliks power people, and by that i mean lets not assume that Sergio can take Pavliks power just as welll as he did Williams.....

but that aside, i agree with you Bone for the most part, Sergio's fast hands and feet along with his lateral and in and out movement would definitely trouble a slugger like Pavlik, but i'm not so sure about schooling him.....i think it would be a tough fight for both guys, but i'd favor Sergio

as long as he keeps outside of his jab and lets his left hand go more (which he didn't use much against Williams, though thats likely because he was a southpaw) i think he could find alot of success.....

but at the same time, Sergio ain't scared to trade shots, and they're aren't many guys who want that more then Pavlik, it would be a good fight, possibly even great
