I remember watching this fight live back in 04, mannnnnnn what a fight it was. The thing that surprised me about this fight was how scared and reluctant Freitas was to stand in the pocket and trade. He was always known as a massive puncher too at 130 so id figured that he'd be confident enough in his power to trade with Chico but never did he sit down on his punches. Instead he semi got on his bike and boxed and he did a pretty good job for himself until he got tired... IT wasnt a bad game plan but he wasnt in the condition to keep up that pace.. What are ur memories of this fight?
Freitas going down twice like he was shot in the back of the head, yet somehow getting up. Can't remember which knockdown but Chico hit him with a right and Freitas looked like a felled tree. I also remember watching the knockdowns multiple time on the DVR.
I think that's the 2nd knockdown, can't believe Freitas got up from that, absolutely unbelievable shot.
Yes, that was the 2nd one, a brutal knockdown. I also thought he wouldn't get up, Freitas had a bad chin.
Corrales was a puncher. After waiting for Freitas to tire he caught him and put him down. Great fight! RIP Chico!!!
I think he only started moving around once he got really hurt. I think I remember him throwing good punches also, only Chico handled them well.
I love this fight. It was Margarito/Cotto at lightweight. Freitas was such a dissappointment, he was the Manny Pacquiao of Brazil but basically told his people they arent worth the punishment.
He had a silly game plan trying to box when your stamina is that bad will get you KOed everytime as you will gas out. Good win by Chico. But Chico was over-rated
Freitas was never winning that fight. He showed NO aggression, ran without landing effective shots, all he threw were 'keep away from me' type shots, and when Diego caught up to him he hit him so hard I think Frietas' body went horizontal three feet off the ground. Kudos to Acelino for getting up from that, and I don't blame him for getting out of that fight the way he did. Diego might have killed him.
No. He's underrated, if anything. As is JLC and prime Casa. Freitas too, for that matter. They were all excellent fighters.
Popo came into the fight having no belief whatsoever that his power can hurt Chico. He conceded the power contest even before the bell rang. I remember watching Chico connect with a big big bomb and Popo's head looked like it got detached from his neck with the way it turned after the hit.
Actually Popo was giving Chico al sorts of trouble smacked Chico in the first rounds with some good shots. but chico eventually cut the ring off. Like someone already said Popo just didn't sit on his punches. great fight though
