both prime , who wins and how ? charles was better than jones' opponents at 175 , but , what can he do against jones ? does anyone see him charge at jones ? and will it be smart for him to do against a prime jones ? one thing i don't think will happen is charles stopping jones. i mean 12 rounds
but how could he do it ? will he rush jones ? is it a charles thing to do ? will he brawl him ? you know that not. you see all of toney's (ATG) and jones' common opponents and jones clearly got the better results over them and also beat toney (albeit severely drained) : Griffin , Reggie Johnson , Tony Thornton , Mike McCallum , Merqui Sosa , Glenn Thomas and maybe more. damn , thinking about it , a prime jones is clearly better than a prime toney who is a definite ATG , to speak mildly. jones also wins in such a comparisson against mccallum , reggie johnson and more , but i think the comprehensive comparison with toney is enough.
I think Jones has a very, very good chance here. I'd actually be leaning towards him based upon the styles. But I think if Charles can clatter him Jones will go. Given how savy Charles is you've got to believe he would become accustomed to Jones style at some point and trap him, one way or the other (countering or movement-specific pressure). If I was making a pick over 12 rounds I guess I would pick Jones based upon the style advantage.
Ezz would bait him like he did Moore in their final match, and bushwhack him. RJJ didn't see that kind of feigning in his time, and would have fallen for the trap.
RJJ does not fall into traps , his victims do , however. RJJ is a safety-first boxer. i say that the one who may be caught here is charles , while the other times jones simply does a number on him winning decisions. if charles catches him , he stops him , but i would not have happened realistically because of what i mentioned above and obviously jones' speed (his prime version is the one regarded here) .
frankenfrank jones has the speed but charles was no slouch and was the better boxer in my humble opinion jones the better athlete charles the better boxer there will be people who disagree but it is all about opinions
Technically shut him down the way he did to Charley Burley. Yeah, Jones has such an iron chin after all...
There's a convincing argument right there. Burley has some of the same "hurky jerky" rythym breaking style that Jones has, relies heavily upon speed, fights safety first against bigger men pot-shoting and moving on in a decent approximation of the style Jones might use. Charles certainly has more form beating up fighters of Roy's type than Jones does beating up fighters of Ezzard's quality. There isn't the same natural size difference here of course.
It was a good argument didnt Burleys saprring partner was it 'Blackie' Nelson say Jones Jr was the fighter Burley was most similar too when asked about how Burley fought
I can see arguments for both here. I'd sway towards Charles however, i believe he is one of the few light heavys that has enough speed whilst not to be able to match jones to at least not be overwhelmed by it. I think he would drop the 1st few rounds before beginning to come back, getting more adjusted to roy style and countering the lead left hooks and right hand leads more and more effectively to either stop roy late or to win a tight UD. I'm not certain of this pick though, i could certainly see roy getting a decision and causing havoc to charles rythmn. I suppose when it comes down to it charles is just more proven at the weight and it makes it more difficult to go against him. I definetly pick Jones at 168 and below
On the other hand Jones would be dealing with a prime Ezzard rather than the relatively green version that beat Burley. Therefore I think the stakes are more or less evened up for this bout, and without the chin to rely on, I don't think Jones would hear the final bell. When you consider that his power was not as effective at LHW (outside of his body shot KO on Hill he didn't really show too much in that regard, especially past a certain point) and that he started to stand more flat-footed in his approach, I think you have a recipe for disaster for Jones once Charles puts the finishing touches on his plan. Charles by KO, probably around the 9th.
