On par IMO...though probably not as historically significant (at this stage), its the biggest fight of this era.

Its the kind of fight we need every generation to keep the sport going...Ill be stoked when it comes off.

can't make those sorts of comparisons as they were different times and in differing contexts. There is a tendency to believe 'the latest is the greatest; but I dunno.

 

I would say it is even more historically significant than Hagler vs. Leonard. This one is worldwide.

 

Bigger in terms of more hype? Sure.

Bigger in terms of pitting better fighters against one another? Nah.

 

I would actually say, particularly in boxing, it tends to go the opposite way. People glorify the heroes of the past to the point where they don't like to even entertain the idea that they could be surpassed.

 

pea and chavez was a good matchup but not a HUGE fight like this one worldwide....hagler and leonard was supposed to be hagler by KO...that was a huge upset with SRL coming up to mw....THIS fight is huge worldwide and a great matchup with a ton of hype and hugs ppv numbers....the winner will go down as one of the greatest fighters ever...ONE OF...NOT THE since it is all subjective

IMO this is bigger. Neither Pea nor Chavez (nor Hagler nor Leonard) had the kind of worldwide appeal and cultural significance that Pacquiao has. He is also an ATG. Not just boxing fans but people in general want to see him fight. He is dragging a country's economy behind him.

Meanwhile, I can't remember for a long time, when someone as unbelievably talented as Mayweather has been so widely derided that people are desperate to see him beaten.

With regards Hagler-Leonard, this fight is also bigger because of the parity ability-wise of Mayweather and Pac. Hagler-Leonard was big because of the men involved but not because most thought it would be an amazing fight. Most thought Hagler would dismantle Sugar Ray.

There is also the stylistic aspect: the greatest defensive boxer of his generation (maybe of all time [just imo, sorry]) versus the most awesome offensive force I can remember. This in itself is huge.
