Macklin is about the caliber of contender we'd expect from Pavlik. However, staging the proposed Macklin-Pirog fight, and the winner (IMO Pirog) could have a case calling himself a legit contender.

not really a lot of options for Pavlik ... he wants to stay at 160 of course, its his best weight and he owns the ring belt there... Martinez and Williams (the two best 154lbers) are probably going to fight eachother again...

I would like to see him go after Sturm...

    Pretty weak time for MW

    Who has Macklin beaten?

He's not much better than Gary Lockett.

Kelly will destroy him and beat the crap out of him.

He'll be lucky to last half the time he lasted with Jamie Moore.

He can only blame himself if Williams and Martinez will end up fighting on HBO and Pavlik not. It's not hating. You cannot postpone forever then pull out claiming you came back from death and can't use your hand AND schedule a 12 round championship fight a few days later. Why would HBO do him a favor after this and give him an opportunity vs. an unknown, unproved (for the World MW Championship) challenger? Now Felix Sturm (fought DLH on HBO) as you pointed out, would make much more sense (barely got past Gevor due to gift), badly past-it Winky Wright as well, as both are viewed relatively safe "name fights" HBO would accept. But Macklin? First he's gotta prove himself vs. either a top dude or a fellow unproved top10 contender such as Pirog, and the winner can join the like of Sturm, Winky, underrated Gevor & interim champ Zbik. That is of course if HBO don't demand a higher caliber fight, Williams or Bute.

He seems pretty good to me, but inexperienced. Awkward, crouched-in style, throws punches in explosive combos from all angles, decent power, top amateur background. Hasn't beaten anyone all that good, but Macklin would be a good test.

At 14 fight he seems to me very talented and mature in there and beating Kofi Jantuah in the fashion he did was very impressive.
