What Fighters "RUINED" their careers by moving up in weight???

Ok, maybe the word "RUINED" may be kinda' strong...But hopefully you'll see where I am going.

But IMO...1 FIGHTER that should have never made the jump in weight was:

FELIX "TITO" TRINIDAD
He was absolutely unbeatable at 147lbs!!! Even at 154lbs was still dominant. BUT TITO SHOULD HAVE NEVER FOUGHT AT 160LBS!!!

Would have love to see Tito fight Mosley and Vernon Forrest at 147lbs...Would have been a SPECTACULAR fight.

By Round 3 of the Hopkins fight it was SO OBVIOUS that Tito had NO BUSINESS fighting at 160lbs!!!!

 

Not ruines but fighters that werent the same after they moved up in weight:

Johny Tapia
Ricardo Mayorga
Ricky Hatton
Carlos Zarate
Ruben Olivares

 

Nah. Skills beat Tito not some insane pyhsical disadvantage which clearly wasn't the case. Winky Wright was pretty much the smaller and weaker man yet he "ruined" him like Hopkins minus the TKO. Tito absolutely blasted away Joppy, something even Hopkins and Taylor couldn't do, and then again, smart skills beat him not some physical force. Whether he got ruined at 160 or not is irrelevant - he was ruined by fighting HOPKINS at 160, but if he forced Bernard to make 156 he would've made 156 and still ruin Tito. Sorry, no excuse. Now if you're referring to him fighting Jones at 170, now that was a single fight and late in career.

Corrales at 147 looked ruined by Clottey, of course he never had a chance for a 2nd fight. Castillo's 147lbs campaign was cut short too, by Lujan, and for Chrissakes, they want Cotto-Castillo atsch. We can only hope fighting a WW didn't ruin Juan Manuel Marquez. De La Hoya was hardly the same after fighting at 160 (him vs. Sturn and Tito vs. Joppy - that's the difference). Oscar Larios was **** at 126 and ruined by Linares, and I'm very much afraid the same thing is gonna happen to Vazquez and Marquez. And other several names, I just mentioned a few from recent times.

 

Hopkins did out skill him but look at the pics tito is soft at 160 clearly just carrying extra pounds , Hopkins lloks like he is carved out of wood.

Tito was no 160 pound fighter, he was a welterweight powerpuncher , that guy is always going to lose to a skilled ( big ) middleweight

 

Mayorga, IMO never took the sport seriously. So was his jump up in weight truly gain a title or respect at a higher weight or did he just have a problem with making 147lbs.

I toatally agree with Tapia, I don't Agree with hatton...Hatton just fought some really FAST & SLICK Boxers (Floyd & Collazo)...And you know what they say: "A GOOD BOXER BEATS A GOOD PUNCHER ANY DAY OF THE WEEK."

Once Olivares moved up...he could still "hold his own"...But I do see what your saying.

 

That's what happened to Tito.

 

Indeed Tito was a one trick pony , and once he went up that trick was alwasy going to be harder to pull off.

You have a guy who realistically was a lhw agaisnt a guy who was realistically a LMW , with the LMW trying to just walk throught and slug out the bigger guy

Dunno if it would have made a difference in the long run , Hops knows too many tricks to get balsted out by a guy like tito

 

Blame Mosley he didnt want this fight either, I dont Blame him Tito Had the Ill hand wraps, Gurantee KO

 

How about Roy after his move up to heavyweight? Yes he boxed Ruiz's ears off, but he evidently struggled when he moved back down to light heavyweight. Tarver and Johnson capitalized on it big time.

and if you wanna look at recent weight jumps, JMM is a good example. Let's just hope that weight gain hasn't spoiled him for good.

Was "the man" at CW and might've had a heck of a legacy there. He has no chance against the Klits and i just don't think he's big enough to do well at HW.

 

id say roy jone jr ok he won a heavyweight title but he was never the same when he came back down

 

I think an easy division to see this in is the Cruiserweight division.

AL COLE couldve had a great full career in the division but moved up and turned into a journeyman.

VASILY JIROV same.

Smaller weight classes doesn't jump out as much to me since the weight differences can't be as extreme.

 

Hopkins schools Tito any day of the week, but I don't think tito had any buisness fighting at 160. Not discrediting Hopkins in ANY WAY, he faught the perfect fight against a monster.
