Pre revisiting-I remember being a kid and Hopkins was my idol. I had a dislike for Taylor and I thought Lou DiBella was the biggest dick hole. The way I remembered it going was Taylor won all of the 1st 8 rounds or atleast 6. Hopkins did nothing until round 9 and on the rest of the rounds. Could have stopped him but did not and toyed with him and let him off the hook. I hoped Hopkins would win when they announced it and he lost but I thought it was 8-4 when I watched 7-5 at worst for taylor. I was frustrated by the fight and never really wanted to watch it but I rewatched also for the purpose to score myself. I remembered Lampley and the crowd getting way into it whenever Taylor landed or threw for that matter. I muted the sound and decided to watch. Boy was my perspective different.
1 10-9 Taylor same as Lederman
2 10-9 Taylor same as Lederman
Hopkins did nothing so far and was even almost KD'd in the 2nd and Taylor is very wild and aggressive. Way cruder than today's Taylor
3 10-9 Hopkins Lederman scored for Taylor Taylor missed alot I thoguth Bernard landed the cleaner blows could have went either way.
4 10-9 Hopkins Disagreed with Lederman again Good exchanges though I felt Hopkins got the better of Taylor very wild
5 10-9 Hopkins agrees with Lederman Taylor could not find him with his shots and lands nothing clean good left hooks by Nard and solid countering
6 10-9 Taylor Agrees with Lederman no real lands first minute Taylor still wild good land inside by B-hop lots of holding another tight round but Taylor finishes wll throwing alot of jabs.
7 10-9 Taylor Agreeing with Lederman Taylor agressive early with combos and jab. Hopkins makes him miss twice goes to counter but Taylor flurries and gets the better of it Taylor finishes strong with a good jab
8 10-9 Hopkins Lederman has it the same Taylor corners him early. Big shots from taylor and a nice right. Two strong jabs from Taylor than a 1-2. Good right from Nard and he loks shaken Hopkins lands 4 or 5 inside rights in row they go to the ropes. 2 jabs from Nard Taylor good start Bernard better finish
9 10-9 Hopkins same page as Harold Lederman Taylor cannot stop the right hand Taylor though keeps flurring back despite obviously being hurt. Hopkins repeated rights to the ropes and Taylor holds on for dear life. Refusing to let go a s Nady tries to break them apart seems like Hopkins may stop him Hopkins spins him while hooking just a genius at work.
10 10-9 Hopkins same as Lederman
11 10-9 Hopkins Lederman same Taylor tired and wobbly continues to throw back despite having no answer for Hopkins right which lands at will. Hopkins mauls well this round and takes him to the ropes. Jab by Nard snaps Taylor's head back. Taylor nice combo and then a good 1-2
12 10-9 Hopkins Lederman same way Hopkins bulls in to start. Taylor still in it with a nice combo then a good 1-2 Bhop another right then he lands a left right. His right still lands at will. Bhop lands a great 4 punch combo.

Final 8-4 Hopkins now I'm no pro judge but that is a total flip flop from my first score years ago. I gues after rewatching my opinion changed. Hopkins did win some early rounds. Taylor looked very wild in effective. He did not dominate as I had thought. Maybe I was just listening to Lmapley and the crowd too much. Close fight though but I had to disagree with Lederman at times. Some close rounds and some that others will disagree with. Your thoughts

I pretty much saw it the way you did. They stole that fight from bernard. It was kinda the out with the old and in with the new and boy did that backfire. Taylor was boring and questionable won his next 5 fights. When you pretty much force out a legend, chances are its gonna backfire.

Ill do the same. I watched it atleast 10x a while back and when i score it i give every close round to taylor and i still had hopkins winning easy. Ive dont the same with the calzaghie fight and am just baffled at how anyone could possibly think joe won that fight.

Haven't watched it in a while, but I felt Hopkins did enough to get the victory. He came on strong in the second half and was hurting Taylor.

I had B-Hop winning by 2 rounds if I remember correctly. I also agree that they took the title from him, forcing the 'change of gaurd' type thing.

    Felt the same dude.

I'm struggling to remember whether Joe even landed a clean shot on Hopkins. Everyone that watched that fight knows it was Joe's workrate and pitter patter punches that scraped him through. I remember in the last round Enzo shouting in the corner something along the lines of...."You need a knockout to win!"

I think most of my judging comes from muting it. I think at times I like some get carried away by commentators and unofficial judges. I feel like 8-4 Bhop maybe a bit wide but I dont think im far off

No one is going to ever convince me that Hopkins wasnt robbed that night..very bad decision.

The rematch however was a improved performance by Taylor and an almost bizarre performance by Nard considering he had shown he could dominate JT when he wanted to in the first fight. I thought he let that fight slip out his fingers and though I thought he probably still deserved the nod or a draw (which is what I initially scored it as Im pretty sure) it was debatable enough that I was fine with Taylor getting the verdict.

In the first 7 rounds ( in which ive watched well over 20x in slow mo) Joe landed no more then 10 punches. Joes biggest highlight was that shotty attempt at gay porn when he did that dumb ass dance behind hopkins. He and his dad were frustrated the whole night and that convo you remember went like this, enzo said WHAT THE **** R U DOING OUT THERE, joe said HES CHEATING. enzo replied I DONT CARE< YOU NEED A KNOCKOUT.

I has Hops by 8-4 as well. I've talked my share of **** about this fight over the years.. Basically, I couldn't give Taylor points for swinging wildly at air. Even though Bernard may have only landed a few counterpunches in some of those early rounds, it was still more effective then Jermain trying to swat at flies for the first 6 rounds or so.

I will say that Hops sort of shot himself in the foot in that fight. Not only did he not take advantage of all the mistakes Taylor was making, he also didn't go for the KO in those last 3 rounds when Taylor was clearly hurt, and as is his custom, was running out of gas. Bernard's cautious style cost him a big win in that fight.

Havent rewatched it and dont have my card, but your card is way off base. Bhop was almost a dead fighter that night. He gave the fight away. It was one of his lowest punch outputs I can remember and he deserved the loss. I scored it for Taylor. You dont win a championship by not working in the ring. he gave away a lot fo the first 6-7 rds.
