Anyone know what his pro wrestling contract is like? I'm sure I read a few months ago that he is doing it part-time or something? I just hope it doesn't affect his MMA career.

I am not a wrestler, however...

Freestyle: shooting for the legs is permitted

Greco-Roman: shooting for the legs is prohibited. Attacks are limited to upper-body throws and locks, based on a faulty 19th century understanding of what ancient Greek wrestling was like. It's actually French.

:think Why do they continue to exist in parallel? And the American or "scholastic" offshoot to boot? Oughtn't the less appealing or functional form(s) be phased out by now? It's confusing enough that athletic playacting has co-opted (actually, hijacked) the very name wrestling, but to have "real" wrestling further distinguished three ways just seems a bit of a cluster**** to me.

It'd be like if London Prize had survived right alongside but separate from modern boxing.

Greco is upper body; you can't use your legs to trip or attack the opponents legs. Freestyle and Folkstyle (college/high school) are pretty similar, but rule differences like being able to lock your hands at times, scoring differences; Jin folkstyle a takedown is 2 points regardless, in freestyle there are different scores based on the amplitude. Freestyle and Greco are scored more so similarly, but folkstyle and freestyle look more similar.

Freestyle and Greco are international sports, whereas folkstyle is pretty much American only. In that respect you could say that those two are "harder" as they have a deeper talent pool.

    Wikipedia explains it pretty well.

As for Lashley, I don't mean to be an ass, but have you seen him fight? He is really not nearly as impressive as Lesnar or almost any other of the great wrestlers going into MMA.

Really the only thing him and Lesnar and Lashley have in common is they were pro wrestlers, but Lashley just doesn't look half as promising.

Come on though, do you find him a particuarly promising prospect? His fights just don't make him look that special. I imagine if he had never bloated up to a heavy and was fighting at a weight more natural to his bone structure and natural size he would look much better.

what do you mean? he is 6'3. he is overmuscled but what would you expect of him.

i've read you or someone else talk about him being naturally smaller.

Dude your talking ass. Lashley is an exceptional physical talent for his size. Genetically he's a fine specimen. Matter of fact even more so physically than Brock. As a prospect he's no different to Carwin.

Either way you cant just casually dismiss him. He moves impressively for a man of his size and personally i think his GnP is better than Brocks. The thing that Lashley lacks is the self belief and confidence. He's quite a reserved fellow who takes most things in his stride hence why his MMA development has been quite slow. (also due to other commitments) But to allude that he's not a heavy just because he wrestled at 177 is pretty stupid. Lashley certainly carries excess musculature but thats no different to Brock. Both men are products of OVW. OVW = copious amounts of hormones.

I understand that amateur wrestlers dry out too. Lashley could have been 200 pounds when fighting in the 177 class. How old was he?

I've seen pics of Mir as a skinny as hell teenager wrestling but now he can barely make weight!

Mir weighed in at 264lbs yesterday. He also looks pretty solid at the weight. Could he be lighter? Maybe. Should he be lighter? No. Mir Lashley etc are 30 plus year old men. There at physical maturity and are 200lb plus men. Anyone in excess of 200lbs is a bonafide heavy.

Well I don't mean to imply Lashley is small, but he just reminds me of Sherk at 170, it seems that the added stength from all the muscle is less than the comparative advantages of fighting at say 205 with less muscle. Then again Sherk was one of the best 170 fighters for a long time.

Ground and pound better than Lesnar? As good of a prospect as Carwin? Are we watching the same fights?

Better physical speciman than Lesnar? That's the hardest one to sell. Lesnar's NFL workout #'s are those of a world class athlete.
