Good question, the next 2 front runners at 155 are Maynard and Edgar so I'm not sure if either of those fights are interesting for BJ. A jump to WW might be interesting but he should fight a solid contendor like Kos or another top 10 guy, he should have to earn his way to another title shot.
I think with Maynard being 6-0-1 in the UFC he is next in line especially considering he beat Edgar but Maynard usually just grinds out decisions he hasnt really been impressive IMO. Maynard could change that if he where to submitt, KO or atleast dominate Nate Diaz at the next fight night. Edgar has looked the most impressive lately with the Sherk win and that dominate win over Reach last week but hes smaller and has lost to Maynard just last year. I think Tyson Griffin would be a tough fight but he has lost a couple times pretty recently and is out with an injury at the moment. I personally feel the toughest fight could be Jose Aldo but would Zuffa be willing to make the fight yet considering Aldo really hasnt proved his 145 dominance because he hasnt even defended his WEC belt. Best thing for BJ is take a rest and let 2 contenders duke it out.
Definitely Maynard, based on his exceptional record in the UFC. It's not an insiring title fight, but he certainly deserves it. And I'd rather see BJ hang around at 155 and crush people, than turn into a pudge and move up in weightclass. He's the greatest ever at 155, and he's merely good at 170. Stay and defend the title over and over, BJ.
With all this talk of "legacy" last night with Penn, I think there's only 1 fight he's going to be interested in.
I think B.J will stay at 155, for the practical reason that too many UFC champions are out of action and they need title fights to headline cards. If B.J moves up again it won't be for a while. Gray Maynard is in line for a title shot providing he gets past Nate Diaz next month. If Maynard loses I'm sure Frankie Edgar will fill in.
Maynard and Edgar should rematch for number one contendr status. Whomever they place in front of BJ is going to need some serious PR and hype to convince the buying public that they will stand a chance at beating Penn. Best way to start that hype is by hyping the fight to determine the number one contender.
If you ask me, he probably faces either Edgar or Maynard next as much as people might hate to hear it, I want him moving up to 170 to fight GSP again. With Marv and Gary as his strength and conditioning guys, I think they can help him move up better than he has in the past, he won't just be a pudgy guy, he'll be faster and stronger at 170 than before.
BJ would dominate both Maynard and Edgar with relative ease. He can't beat GSP, but I could see him holding his own with any other Welterweight. I'd like to see him in against maybe Koscheck. That would be interesting.
Maybe he'll wait until GSP moves up, then go dominate 170 again. I'd really like to see him get another crack though, I think that with his new program and confidence that he'll do better than last time.
nah i think he should forget about the welterweight division and just dominate his division much like gsp dominating the welterweight division.
There needs to be some sort of #1 contender fight, but as has been mentioned Maynard already beat Edgar. Maynard is the one with the best chance of actually taking him down, but Tyson Griffin and Edgar are the ones who stand a better chance of not getting beaten quite as badly on the feet. Maybe Aldo or Brown could move up? Aoki would be interesting, but it would just be a savage beating with his chin and no Japanese refs to cater to his every whiney cry.
