Actually, even though I expect Taylor to lose badly, and really want him to retire, I think Ward will pay some heavy dues for his tactics. JT is no stranger to rough and dirty tactics.
You raise a VERY interesting question...given how much of a frontrunner Jermain is (basically a big Judah; the parallel also applies to his potential/fulfillment gap and ratio of natural talent to mental discipline) how screwed might Ward be if they make it past four rounds, and it's stopped on a cut caused by an accidental (ruled) headbutt? :think
I don't think Ward has much to worry about. Think about Taylor's last fight. I'll list of few of JT's trade marks: Sharp accurate left hook: MIA Blistering lead right: MIA Class "A" counterpunching: MIA Sharp accurate combinations: MIA Stiff accurate jab: all he did was tap-tap-tap Lujaun Simon put up a better fight against Abraham than JT did. Taylor is shot, and I think the very best we can hope for is to see Ward pay for his bull**** tactics a few times.
Taylor fought cautiously against a MONSTROUS puncher (whatever your jaded personal opinion of Abraham, you have to concede that justified reputation). Taylor will open up with Ward. He watched the Kessler fight. He'll know what he's in for. He's made up his mind to hang in and try to do this thing, my gut says he's going to put his head down and go to work. We will see a fresh, back to basics Jermain Taylor. Personally, the notion that he's physically shot seems like bunk to me.
Thats funny because prior to Pavlik/Taylor I you had this to say http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?p=200567#post200567 hrmm.....:think
I was saying this farrrr before the Froch fight. Taylor's deterioration has been apparent for quite some time now. Many more started saying this after the Froch fight, which I thought was a stretch. To still be saying this after the Abraham fight is way over the top. People need to understand what boxers put their bodies through during a career like Jermain's, along with those beatings. He should not have been chosen for the Super Six tournament in the first place, let alone continue fighting now. To disagree with this would mean to have a significant misunderstanding of boxing.
If Taylor pulls off a win against Ward, it will be a truly amazing come back: One of the most shocking of my lifetiime. JT got knocked out in September 2007. He got hurt bad in February 2008. He got knocked out in April 2009, and knocked out again in October 2009. Sorry, but the kid who beat Hopkins, and became the first guy who forced Pavlik to fight 12 hard rounds, schools Abraham, and yet, we saw JT fighting cautiously, and getting out boxed by a crude slugger. Jermain mother****ing bad intentions Taylor got OUT JABBED by Arthur Abraham!!! Openings for the lead right were there all night long, but JT didn't even seem to notice. Smaller guys with less pop than JT were able to back Abraham into a corner and keep him there for long periods. Taylor did not do that even once. Shannon Taylor came off a TKO loss to Raymond Joval, and straight into a title fight with AA, and made the distance. Jermain got knocked out. LuJaun Simon was living off "old" Bronco McKart's left overs. He won about the same number of rounds Jermain did, but unlike JT, Simon saw the final bell. I sincerely hope the CSAC does the right thing, and refuses to let Jermain fight. I'm huge Taylor fan, but the JT I used to love watching no longer exists. We are looking at the man's corpse.
imo best case scenario has JT winning by UD and of course worse case is a hard KO again or worse at the end of a pretty good career. Even if he wins, or for that matter, lucks out and somehow wins the tourney, wher doses he go from here? I honestly don't think it's worth the risk to his health the man already has plenty of money plus a beautiful wifey and kids, quit while you're ahead Jermain. Don't get me wrong tho, if they let him fight I'm rooting for him with all my might, he's a class act.
Admittedly, he fought like a schmuck against Abraham (a lot of that may have simply been confidence...I'm telling you, my hunch is that it's largely mental); but part of what keeps me optimistic about him is the fact that Taylor-Froch I was damn near the same outcome as Bute-Andrade I. The slugger coming on just a little too late. As it is, Froch got him and now it reads as one of three KO losses in a couple of years on Taylor's record...but it belies the real story of that fight. Jermain was going to win on points, against a guy that shut out (a perhaps slightly drained) Jean Pascal...and came so damn close. He didn't look like the same guy that made Bernard feel close to his age for twenty four rounds, but he still looked to have the majority of his physical tools. His problems in my view are mental until proven otherwise. If he totally shits the bed against Ward (isn't even competitive), I might throw in the towel and join the "bow out of the tournament" bandwagon, too...
I would too if I have someone capable of giving me a concussion and sending me to the hospital for 2 days Boo. Come on, I remember you said here after the fight that was the best AA you have seen yet.:good
If Jermain wants to continue his career, which it looks like he does, he should step back, and fight some Manfedo and Brinkley types. If he can handle them, then step up to a Zuniga level fighter. Hanshaw and Oganov would be good candidates as well. I wouldn't mind seeing him spend all of 2010 just rebuilding, and Nelson is not qualified to be chief 2nd.
He'll be OK even with his group stage draws... Ward isn't going to have as stationary a target in Jermain as he did in Kessler. Particularly if Jermain watches tape (of both their stage 1 outings) and spackles the holes in his defense and returns to his old form. It's not like Jermain will be taking tons of flush punches from a heavy hitter. And as for Kessler, his confidence has been proven to be pretty fragile. It took a few fights after losing to Calzaghe for him to begin to look like a real Viking again. Even a KO win over Froch probably won't shake the slick boxer heebie-jeebies from his encounter with Ward. This will be more of a jab-happy Kessler than a seek-and-destroy version. Taylor might still wind up eating a right hand now and then, but the outcome of Ward-Kessler really benefited him as Kessler will be much shyer to throw that money punch. now hardwired to be fearful of counters.
