Toney has responsed postitively to the challenge issued by Antonio Tarver. Let's wait if it happens. Not the best fight but still better than Adamek-Estrada or Arreola-Minto. The winner could face the winner of Hopkins-Green or get an eliminator at heavyweight.
Well it's better than nothing, but I don't think this will help James at all if he wants to make a last run for a HW belt. Seems like both men are desperate for a 'big fight' - but Tarver has never been a draw, and is even less popular these days, so this won't really be a 'big' fight. Besides, Tarver lost his last two fights. Toney would be better off fighting a real HW, even if it's not a big 'name' - what about Ray Austin, Shannon Briggs, or that Nagy Aguilera guy (the one who knocked out Maskaev recently)?
I agree with your post completely, even if he wins this does nothing for Toney but the truth is the options are few... ...Austin has a eliminator coming up with Solis. ...Briggs has a fight in january coming up,expect another Marcus McGee type opponent or slightly better. ...Aguilera is another high rsk/low reward type fight.
This will be a fans dreams....ten years ago. (The tenses are off for the poetic nature of this post.) Hopefully both fighters are fast enough to inflict harm upon one another so the critics will have no choice but to be shocked and demand a rematch. However, we can't count both parties out. Although this may be something that "should have" happened we can still relish in that fact this it "is about to" happen. I would watch it. Just for the commentary. James and Tarver are two of the best at it.
Can't say I'm that interested in this. I like Toney but he missed his chance at heavyweight to become champion.
Hopkins has made clear that he does not want Toney at this point. Tarver is the only opponent right now who seemingly wants to face Toney.
If Toney was actually dedicated to staying in shape he would be a cruiserweight right now. Remember Toney was undefeated at cruiserweight and imo James Toney is the second best cruiserweight of all time, behind Holyfield. Toney winning a belt at heavyweight is very slim, because that's simply not his weight.
Well this is better than fighting another Mathew Greer level bum If Toney can get impressive victory it could land him bigger heavyweight fight in the future
Perhaps. But he is old and has looked poor in his last couple of fights. I just don't think he can compete at championship level any more.
