I suspect that many of us here recall the scathing opinion after - I think - Wladimir's victory over Tony 'The Breakfast Cereal Mascot' Thompson. Surely tonight's herculean effort from the streamlined and imperiously effective Kevin Johnson makes a re-assessment of the 'State of the States' heavyweights a necessity? I've never seen a heavybag impersonate a drunken Floyd Mayweather so accurately.
Why not do Steve Bunce versus the American heavyweights? I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have to worry about Johnson throwing any punches.
I had Eddie Chambers on my BBC London show last week and even he was critical! Where is the pride? Johnson with his chin had the chance. Adios.
He might not have wanted to be in the January Glass Jaw rankings? I just can't understand him not trying..... Vitali has clearly slipped a long, long way, yet was allowed to treat the guy like a 3rd rate sparring partner. Why not move around the ring, test out those dodgy knees a little, rather than trying to rope-a-dope?
Thats what I don't get...Johnsons best chance was if Vitali fell apart physically, but he just never gave himself the chance to test him
You can tell with the way he fights that he is concerned about it as well...... he walks forward in straight lines and doesn't give angles - he never really did at his peak, which is probably why Chris Byrd gave him problems (despite losing nearly every round) but Johnson just sat on the ropes and allowed himself to be pummelled with arm punches. There is a bit of a indestructable ''thing'' surrounding him because he hasn't been down and took a monster uppercut from Lewis, but that was six and a half years ago, and he hasn't been hit by a fast, proven at world level puncher in his comeback. The oddsmakers will say Haye has a better chance at beating Wlad, for a while I've been unsure of that, last night proved it to me - Haye will have a better chance with Vitali. If it goes wrong, the KO loss will probably be quicker and more brutal, and if it goes right it will take longer - styles and all.
Clearly Vitali was not challenged and became lethargic.The Klitchko's have always been safety first and not interested in entertaining the paying fans.
On another thread I said his Jab looked good but he never followed it up. Chambers said on Bunce's show that he was going to give it a go. Lets hope he at least walks the walk!
Yes, Chambers at least is someone that is obviously trying his best and working hard at the moment. He's improved his conditioning and his focus. I have some measure of confidence in him. Johnson I never did, not for a single second. He's pretty defensively sound and his hands are quick, but he has the kind of punch output that makes Francis-Greenberg looks like Ike-Tua.
Johnson's performance was the biggest disgrace I've seen in a boxing ring, in recent memory. I kept having to remind myself that this unbeaten American was in that ring fighting for a World Heavyweight Title. He brought no plan A, B or C. He set out to lose on points and not get KO'd. What is the point of that? Everyone will just remember him now as that joke who did'nt even bother to punch Vitali when he had numerous chances to. The thing is, Vitali was troubled when Johnson bothered to throw his jab, if he'd followed it up with his non existent right hand, who know's what could have happened. Vitali looked poor, but to be fair he was fighting a guy with a good chin who was in there to survive. He's slowed down a lot though. I still think Haye can beat him. Haye's speed and power will trouble Vitali.
