Can someone without any proper fighting experience make a decent coach?

I imagine it's just like back in school when students tutor their fellow students. All you're really doing is just showing others what you've learned. As a coach/teacher/trainer, getting people to see what you see and understand what you understand is just as valuable as experience.

    Sure you can.

That's pretty much me at the moment. If you have a real love for the sport then you will fine yourself able to convey all the finer points/getting a kid into good habits etc without needing to have gone through the mill yourself.

When you practise and teach boxing on a steady basis you continually hone-in both your technique and your explaining abilities.

I'd never let a punched-up old coach who believed in roughing you up from the get-go tell me that I didn't know squat 'cause i'd never had a real fight before.

my coach has had one amateur fight over 20 yrs ago and got ktfo. lol

He laughs when telling it and said it was a defining moment for him. That he suspected he might be better at coaching then actually fighting. And he really is a great coach in that everything he does he does for free, many many hours weekly, always trying to put our best interests first.

These sorts of people are rare and deserve recognition. I'm pretty sure at the end of the day they do get something from it knowing they are helping so many others. But it doesn't hurt to pull them aside and thank them every now and again.

Yes, but you need to learn from other coaches by being in the gym.

A good boxing coach knowns boxing, knows his fighter and his style, knowns his strengths and weaknesses, and has the ability to get a fighters respect and motivate him.

Boxing needs coaches and trainers. Go for it!

Alex Ferguson had a decent pro career as a striker, playing for Dunfermline, Rangers, and St Johnstone as well as others. :good

Mourinho was never a professional player though.

Yea, what Mourinho has accomplished is incredible considering he didn't have a professional playing career to speak of.

It goes to show that you don't have to be a good soldier in order to become a great general!

:thumbsup I've always said that coaching is the most thankless job there is. Good for you for showing your appreciation.
