Hes a ring general, a long range boxer, defensive wizard kinda like Ken Buchanan what is not 'modern' about him? I think he is the prototype to Willie Pep in some ways and definitly Ken Buchanan and him are cut from the same cloth. Driscoll vs Arguello At first glance Driscoll looks to have a good style to beat Arguello, a long rnage boxer who utilised good movement and a great defence. However i think Arguello would be the better long range boxer and oculd out jab him. Some footage i'm impressed with johnson the next im not, dependant on my mood. The thing i think with Johnson is he masterd his rule set superbly.
If Driscoll is half as good a pure boxer as his reputation indicates, he sure as hell shouldn't be getting outjabbed and outboxed by Arguello, pater.
I just think Arguello could out jab him, not entirely sure about it i didnt think Driscoll showed enough movemetn to beat Arguello he was a good mover and all but he was a great ring general and didnt move alot. This could be his downfall IMO
I wouldn't exactly envision Driscoll doing a Vilomar Fernandez on Arguello; Arguello was not as refined at Feather IMO, though he was still a serious force. For all talk of Driscoll being a boxer the footage paints him as an aggressive one. He hits hard, and doesn't seem to take his hands into consideration with his technique, he will obviously hurt Alexis a lot. But despite his quick moves in and out of punching, I feel Alexis would be able to land his punches on Driscoll. Driscoll, having never fought Alexis, has never going to have experienced something like this. He's in there with an ATG puncher and I think Alexis would hurt even Driscoll. I see Alexis using his height to throw his explosive mid-range bombs at Driscoll. Maybe Alexis goes down at some point. It's such a hard fight to predict when the footage of Driscoll just show him to be an all-out elusive 'pure' boxer. With his toughness, I feel he'd try and out punch Arguello at some stage and it might spell disaster. Arguello was not at his best at this stage though, I feel he peaked at 130 (the concensous is as much) but.......nah, I won't make a pick. Not fair. I may be completely wrong. I will re-review the Driscoll footage and see if it helps me make up my mind. Any articles on his style anyone can recommend???
flea just got sent Driscoll vs Walsh fight reports if your interested my email is This content is protected just email and i will forward them to you
Also good anaylisis Flea Thing with Driscoll i think at times he could be real lick like a kind of Buchanan-esque fighter. Like for example if the only footage we had of Buchanan was his win over Cullen we would think of him as beign an aggresive ring general. I think generally Driscoll was more adaptable and better defesnsivly than this footage shows
just got it today so havent read it myself, i actually got it as its going to be an article for Boxrec News who have asked me to do a weekly article called Retropective here is the first few http://news.boxrec.com/users/greg-paterson
Fair play lad :good I've read a few pages of that Driscoll thing just now, and immediately he strikes me as a similar fighter to Alexis, not in his style of course, but in the fact he liked to fight aggressive fighters who would come at him and he land his hard counter shots on.
