Hey Guys I'm a huge fan of both guys in this match up but thought Whitaker retained his title with a decision win. I'm sure I had it 115-113. Oscar did land the harder blows but they were infrequent and Pernell's jab and ring generalship gave him a nightmare. Despite being 33 years of age at the time, this fight showed how great a fighter Whitaker was. He was simply dazzling but maybe show boated a little too much! The scores that night were a disgrace and Las Vegas began it's love affair with "ineffective" aggression. Ironically this oversight would cost Oscar in fights against Trinidad and the rematch with Mosley. Thoughts and scores on Whitaker vs. De La Hoya? ***Look out for a young Floyd on the undercard and also the reaction of Vargas and Judah when the decision is announced giving Oscar the victory***
I trip out how so many people claim pernell deserved this, the fight was close but Oscar was the clear winner here 115-112.
Hi Mate I scored it for Oscar years back but looking at it now he missed a lot and Pernell controlled large portions of the fight with the right jab. Your opinion is respected though and I wouldn't argue with it!
been a long time since i last saw the fight, but i scored it for dlh. if i recall correctly, i thought whitaker clowned to much. Had he instead concentrated a bit more on offence, he would have done better and might have won, as it was really close. it was certainly a "pass the torch fight", which fuels the fire and controversy surrounding it. Without a doubt a rematch worthy.
Actually, Whitaker was way too defensive, even for him, I attribute that to DLH's relentlessness and power at 147. It was obvious Whiatker needed to fight off the back foot to not get wiped out.
DLH won the fight by 1/2 rounds imo. I watched the fight yesterday aswell, that said i dont think either of them deserved to win it so i would of given it a draw.
I scored it 114-114 with Whitaker giving away the last round. Sweet Pea threw about 70 punches per round for most of his career but in this fight his lack of activity cost him. He simply didn't throw enough punches. There were times when he made Oscar look foolish but I think he gave away too many rounds to get the victory.
I think you just hit the nail on the head right there, whilst he was making Oscar look foolish he was not countering inbetween. You have to score whilst doing that stuff. Whitaker seemed more interested in showing that he could make Oscar miss than putting his hands on him.
I think i had it 114-113 for oscar this would mean that someone was a deducted a point? or was someone down? i've only seen the fight once and can't remember well besides the fact neither fighter dominated
