I love these skilled boxers, but was there ever a fight between two with great defense, great speed that developed into a war?
As above + Rafa Marquez v Israel Vazquez trilogy (Disagree with Hagler v Hearns though, undoubtedly both skilled but it wasn't a very 'skilled war'. It was just brutal.)
Duran was a fantastic fighter, but not what i meant by "skilled boxer", same goes for Hagler. They were more sluggers. EM-MAB was great, so was Mosley-DLH.
let me rephrase: A fight where both come in looking to counter-punch and fight defensively, but get caught up in a war and out of their gameplan.
Duran was very skilled my friend! He was one of the most skilled fighters of all time. It is just that people tend to focus on his savagery in the ring & don't realize that he was great at putting combinations together, had great defense & a superior chin!:bbb
Toney vs McCallum is probably best suggestion i can come up with. Whitaker vs McGirt was very good entertaining fight imo, but not exactly a war! Carl Williams ( if you can say he was skilled!) vs Larry Holmes was a very hard 15 rounds of Boxing.
what you talking about,no they wernt. hagler and duran where incredible boxers. they may be aggressive and could bang but they were not sluggers. slugging is throwing hard continous punches to the other guy gives way. durans outside boxing skills are incredible. just becuase he can go onto the front foot effectivly doesnt make him a slugger. he wasnt just bulling buchannan he was countering him aswell. look at his lightweight reign all behind a snappy left....ooh big right hand OW hell no. even hagler the only time i would consider him a slugger is when he was getting to hearns chin or hamsho's weak defence. look at him against a true slugger in bennie briscoe poetry. just becuase you dance around the ring and look flashy doesnt make you a boxer.
