What about Driscoll outboxing everyone but a handful of opponents?

    No he didn't.

Which man did Hamed ever beat or really compete with who could be deemed as being superior to Walsh, Dixon or Attell?

And what makes you think that he had an iron chin?

Hamed did have a pretty good chin, wouldnt say Iron but Kelley & Sanchez were bangers and he took their best shots without being hurt. Barrera hit him with a fair few good ones and he was never hurt.

Yeah, he had a good chin no doubt. I'm just not 100% convinced it would hold out against the best punchers in the history of the division.

I personally think Hamed had a good chin, dropped but rarely hurt. However, even in his prime he allowed himsef to be tagged and I can envision a big puncher seriously make him reconsider leaving his hands low.

However, as I previously mentioned, I know little of Abe Attell: how good was he and how would he fare against more 'modern' fighters?

I think its feasible that Arguello might nail Driscoll at some point ,but not realistic to think he out boxes him ,especially at long range where Driscoll was a master.Arguello is a very correct, and precise puncher, but speed worried him , due to his slow feet.
It is also not beyond the bounds of possibility that Driscoll could floor Arguello with a quick right hand,he had some pop.

;) Hamed's balance was his chief flaw. He stood up very well to the punishment he had to absorb; it's just that he never faced many true grade A punchers IMO.

There are probably some here - like janitor - who can tell you more about Attell than I can mate. I don't know if any footage of him exists, so it's more of a case of the Harry Greb thing (which might undermine using him to suggest how Driscoll would fare against Hamed actually ). Anyways.....

You might already know what I do: by all accounts he was an extremely intelligent, crafty and well-schooled elusive type with respectable power and great durability. Won a version of the featherweight title in 1903, became undisputed champ in 1908 and held it til 1912 (though Driscoll was recognized by many to be the uncrowned champion from 1910 onwards after Attell supposedly refused to put his title on the line for their fight, which Driscoll won by newspaper decision).
Beat Dixon, Forbes, Kilbane, Neil, Walsh, Sullivan, Herman and had an assortment with Battling Nelson, Welsh, Moran and several others from bantamweight to lightweight. Eventually lost the featherweight title on points to Kilbane over 20 after racking up about 13 or 14 'defenses' I think.

He was supposedly mixed up with racketeering and fight-throwing as well that horrible business with the World Series in 1919 when he was involved with Arnold Rothstein, though he denied any involvement.

There are some informative pieces in the Google news archive if I remember rightly (the ones that aren't pay per view at least).

Hamed could only fight who was around at the time, so you cant compare his opponents to the fighters mentioned.. And as for his chin, it was tested, he came through it.
