Like Leon said, I'm not a fan of UFC but I can appreciate it, and because alot of my mates are into it I usually end up watching some of the bigger fights. I figure that MMA is just too technical for the casual fan and obviously a touch too brutal. Boxing also has the history, and I know that some of my Dad's mates who aren't into boxing at all, still remember the big fights of the last 30 or so years and remember going with their old man to the fights at some point. However, I went to watch my mate fight (MMA) one night at the Mansfield tavern in Brissie and was expecting hell, but I had completely the opposite experience. It was a good night of professional bouts and the crowd was great. The MMA crowds are much better than the boxing crowds, every time I go to a boxing event there are drunk ****wits everywhere and too many "tough" ****s. The MMA crowd are there for the sport and it was just an awesome night. My take on it anway..
I have no problems with MMA. I've grown to like it somewhat, although IMO a good boxing fight is better than a great MMA fight. It's got a lonnnnnng way to go to match boxing on PPV numbers, especially at pubs. It's a relatively new sport and it's in a boom period right now. It'll be interesting to see where it is in 5-10 years time.
I'll watch it for free but it comes nowhere near to generating the excitement that a big boxing fight will. I know it is a very tough sport, but been in too many situations where going to ground means someone else stands on your head....
