MAKING his professional boxing debut on one of Australia's biggest stages has Cowboy Carl Webb raring to go for his stoush early in the new year.

The former junior Golden Gloves champion will line up as the main undercard to the Anthony Mundine versus Robert Medley IBO title fight on January 11 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, it was reported today in the Townsville Bulletin.
The night will also feature the finale of popular boxing reality show The Contender. ''It's been a long time coming, we've talked about this for years and it's finally happening so I'm pretty excited,'' Webb said before training yesterday.
''When I was first told we had a possibility of being on the card it was pretty big. Not only Mundine, it's The Contender series final which is pretty popular in Australia so it's going to be a big night.''

.Webb's manager Sam Ayoub is finalising an opponent for the Cowboys enforcer with an announcement hoped to be made tomorrow. Strength and conditioning guru Billy Johnstone - a former boxer himself - is training the 28-year-old for the fight around Cowboys pre-season sessions.

He said the extra training was not disrupting Webb's preparation for the 2010 NRL season and was proving beneficial with the bookend gaining extra fitness from the gruelling sessions.
''He's been training for a couple of weeks now and he's dropped a bit of weight, he's really enjoying it,'' Johnstone said. ''He misses a session here and there with the Cows but it's good fitness work for him anyway. It's good fun, I'm really enjoying it and so is Carl.
''He wants to go a bit further with it so hopefully he'll work out OK. He had a few fights when he was a young fella and he enjoys it so that's a good start.''
Webb has kept up his boxing training since his success in his teenage years and always intended to return to the ring at some point. He has been linked to step into the ring with a number of Australian footballers, including Willie Mason and AFL's Barry Hall but until now has been unable to get anything concrete.

I heard them announce this on Fox last Friday with all the importance of a celebrity death.

I just thought to myself, this is what Australian boxing needs, another League player taking paydays from local fighters who struggle to make purses a tenth of what this fool will get in his debut.

I've got a feeling Carl will do better than both SBW *cough*, and Hoppa. He was a handy boxer as a young bloke and has aggressive in spade loads. I'm not so much looking forward to his first few fights, but certainly the ones after that.
