Lads i got a press release saying Sweeney was fighting in Mexico tomorrow? anyone else hear that? is there any more news on Ormond and how he is doing in America??
Although some are sceptical I have to say that the Riondeaux signin is great news for Hyde and great news for Irish boxing aswell. Yes it will probably mean us seeing very little of the Cubans from now on and mostly likely won't see Rigondeaux himself fight here at all unless he comes up against an Irish fighter. But what it does mean is more cards for Irish fighters to fight on. I no some are against the idea of Irish fighters building their careers here when they could be doing it at home, but imo the best way is to mix it between here and America(like Lee) or here and the UK(like Macklin). It means it's much less likely that we'll have fighters(at least those connected with Hyde) waiting around looking for fights and getting nothing. It'll help fighters increase their profile internationally aswell, which may make things easier when getting better quality opposition and better known opposition when fighting at home. However one of the main things is that Nowhere to Hyde Promotions(and I'm aware Hyde is manager not promoter of Rigondeaux) will increase in stature and possibly start to turn over a decent profit. It doesn't take a genius to make money with 4 very talented Cuban fighters. ESPN 2 are more than happy to show them, and if you put a card on in Florida it will sell big. If Hyde's profile, and finances were to improve, then he'd be capable of doing more over here aswell. Someone other than Brian Peters may finally be able to put on big cards and attract tv coverage. The problem with people not supporting boxing enough in this country is not that they don't like it, it's the fact they just don't know enough about it. Who's fighting when, who such and such is, who their opponent is. By increasing the general Irish public's knowledge of boxing, the popularity of boxing will increase. But to do that there needs to be more cards and as said before it's hard to have more cards when there currently isn't enough interest for the ones that are there. One thing I think which would really help sell boxing in this country would be a close association with the GAA. eg. if Jamie Power was to be headlining a card in Limerick soon and Limerick were playing at the Gaelic grounds to have some posters up or have a mention of him in the programme or introduce him to the crowd before the game and state where, when he's fighting. Stick a Limerick jersey on him(not hard as Jamie's very fond of his anyway) and promote the message he's fighting for his county and you just may very well see an increase in crowd sizes. Kind of like what Ricky Hatton done with Manchester City fans. The question is what could boxing give to the GAA in return, but GAA figures would certainly find it easier to deal with boxing that soccer or rugby as there's no perceived conflict of interest. Anyway I've gone off on a tangent there but just something that came into my head. RIP Darren, this time last year I was going to his debut
Hyde is being touted as guillermo's downfall on this forum, why are the Irish disliked so much i've never seen an irish poster abuse anyone on this forum or act in an arrogant way and i'm yet to see any 'rub it in there face' comments ?
That's because many on this forum will see us Irish as stereotypical drunks and bullshitters, and don't think we'd be capable of managing a top international fighter. What exactly had Ahmet Ohner done until the last few years ?.......nothing, he came from nowhere and yet no one doubted him. Hyde's ambitious in his matchmaking just like Ohner, and I can't see him holding Rigondeaux back at all. Just ignore the people here, they'll have no chose but to believe in Hyde once he starts getting Rigondeaux some good opposition.
Well said, BigEars, mate. All people have to do is look at Brian Peters. For a guy described as a "publican moonlighting as a promoter" as Maloney said, he did remarkably well delivering for his fighter on the world stage. World title (okay, okay, a version of it) in his home town, no rematch clause for Cordoba, getting the purse for the Poonsawat fight for half nowt - that's a very, very canny Irishman indeed. I bet a lot of foreign fighters would love to have him negotiating for them.
I actually know peters he's spot on gets a horrid bad rep off some people they think he's all shobiz. He told me before Paddy was lookin to get him for an interview but he prefers to keep a low pro.
I was talking to someone who met Darren Sutherland a good few times last year and he told me a few things that I won't post here but if they are true I am shocked and appalled. We recently saw Lou DiBella cutting ties with Jermain Taylor because he was worried about his safety, but it seems human acts like this aren't quite as common with other promoters. If what I heard is true, someone will be taken to court and won't get away lightly.
