if the fight had ever been made? And did Turpin outright duck him or simply not press that hard for the fight to come off on account of Sands being too high risk/low reward? I'm not convinced that Sands ko'ing Dick Turpin like he did has as much to do with it as some accounts would have it.

I was going to do a more in-depth thread on Sands but got derailed slightly, so I'll settle for this. Plus whether or not old Davey boy should have had a crack at the title before tragedy interposed itself. He'd already beat Olson - who went on to get the shot - in October 51, so was it the loss to Yolande Pompey the following month that derailed the train?

Be interested to hear the Aussie perspective on this one......

Hmmm....................whereabouts was Randy in his career at this time?

Watched his Brother get starched by Cerdan last night, someone who either impresses me immensely or looks sloppy.

Sorry to hijack but what do others think of Cerdan? I can't make my mind up, although his stoppage of Zale was brutal (for a former Welter) although Zale looked about 20 years older than the listed 30

That's what all those wars will do to ya :deal

I'd say that he was at or around his peak flea (Turpin, that is). There had been talk of the two of them meeting both before and after Turpin won and lost the title. It apparently began when Sands starched Dick Turpin in the first round for the British Empire title. There are some conflicting reports detailing why Sands never got a crack at Turpin, though it looks to me as though Turpin just didn't want the fight without blatantly ducking Sands at the same time.

And Cerdan looks excellent against Zale, who was still the champion and a dangerous man despite looking like an old slipper by that point. In fact, Cerdan looks pretty impressive full stop, a fair thing when you consider that we might not have actually seen him at his best. The aggressive tactics he deployed against Zale didn't pay off against LaMotta though - understandably.

well, I was expective Cerdan to be a 'pure boxer'. All the fights I have of him involves his mixing it up with clever head movement and rushing in with overhand rights, short left hooks and body shots.

Not what I expected. Did he have another facet to his game? I can only assume he got mullered against the Raging Bull:lol:

Duane Bobick marched into Scott LeDoux's dressing room before their first match, and bellowed, "You don't beat up my brother!" referring to LeDoux's earlier rib breaking ten round whitewash of brother Rodney. After Mickey Walker retired Steve Latzo, he had to answer to Steve's brother Pete, who took Walker's WW Title in a second shot.

Dangerous power puncher Johnny Turner essentially ended the career of Frankie Benitez in eight rounds. Frankie's kid brother Wilfredo decked Turner with a sweeping hook in round two, then slowly stalked Turner all over the ring, methodically torturing him into a bloody mess. (In the post fight interview, Wilfred vehemently denied that this was payback for what happened to Frankie, but Wilfred's back never made contact with the ropes, and every step he took was towards his target or cutting off the ring, something I don't recall him doing in any other bout.)

If Randy actually avoided Sands based on what happened to Dick, that would seem to be extremely unusual sibling behavior within the context of boxing history. The theme of family feuding and familial revenge is also a surefire promotional gimmick. (I'd pay to see Duran punch Ed Viruet again, even today.)

Well that's essentially what I saw in him, though he could be a pretty good aggressive counterpuncher at times. I'm not sure how much other footage of him exists, but I think what you see against Zale is effectively what he actually was.

He tried bulling LaMotta early doors and was coming off second best when he hurt his shoulder during a clinch, which only made it a matter of time really before he packed in on his stool. Obviously the rematch never off because of the tragic circumstances, but I tend to think that Cerdan would have had a hard time against LaMotta under any circumstances. An uninjured shoulder would've helped his cause no doubt.

Against Jose Ferrer for the European Welterweight title in 42.

I've got one of his fights with Olson, though it's just about 20 mins of highlights i think.

I was impressed from what i remember.Very nice mobile boxer-puncher.

He would definitely have a strong chance against Tuprin, tough to be honest i don't rate Turpin as others may do.Very good fighter and a tough puzzle to solve, but he fought like an odd combo of a less skilled Herol Graham and less assertive Ike Quartey. The way he would plant himself with a wide stance and lean straight back from punches and in no position to counter, was just asking for disaster against top fighter willing to step in and throw a lot of punches at him.Easier said than done of course.

One of the reasons why I don't put much stock in the theory of Turpin avoiding Sands based upon Sands KO'ing the other Turpin.

This seems to be the definitive consensus concerning Sands. I was speaking to an old Aussie chap not too long ago in Whitianga (New Zealand) who thought that Sands was better than Rose, Carruthers, Famechon, Fenech, Tszyu et al. Said that he was one of the best he'd ever seen.
