From what I've read the two films of him that are available are two of his worst showings. The one against Jack Johnson and the other I think is his first or forth fight with Papke. I would like nothing more than a complete film of his third fight with Papke, in which he regained the middleweight title. Supposed to have been a pretty dominating performance, supposedly Ketchel stated: “It took you 12 rounds to stop a blind man. I’m gonna let your eyes stay open until the 11th so you can see me knock you out.”
Ketchel was also a very intelligent guy, considering his habits that'd make you think otherwise. He called Jeffries/Johnson to a tee.
One of my favorites too. You gotta love those Hobo cahmpions who rose out of the wild west. In October of next year he will be dead 100 years. BIG party planned for theat day. I may ride down Broadway in a dressing gown , tossing peanuts to the multitude.:rasta
In some ways inteligent people are more prone to risk taking, adiction, and excess. Jack Johnson would be another case in point.
Ketchel was supposed bi-polar/manic depressive, which is backed up by such insanities as pointing a gun at his best friend and breaking down in tears seconds later. I'm manic depressive myself, medicated however. But I can understand 110% how he couldn't consistently train, with the lows/lack of energy/lethargy that comes from the lows of extreme chemically induced lows.
I'd never heard this one before. Very odd. I wonder what the head trauma was about: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=jf8aAAAAIBAJ&sjid=2kgEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3690,5651612
